Arrow Best Aftermarket NAV replacement for PCM I?

I really love my 2002 X-50 but can't help but feel that the NAV is 1998 technology and a bit outdated compared to the rest of the car.

I checked with more than one dealer and you can not replace the PCM I with PCM II (as PCM II is fiber optic and a number of people said it should not be done).

With that said, does anyone know of any good aftermarket NAV systems that could replace the PCM I and look good in the car? I know Alpine is a leader in this area, but is there a particular package that anyone has pictures of? Let me know. Any advice and/or pictures would be much appreciated.

There is a new Kenwood DVD-915 that is supposed to be amazing. Fred has the DVD-911 model in his TT - check out his photo album: http://homepage.mac.com/fredcourtot/PhotoAlbum6.html

Dimitry,

If you can deal with computers yourself, you may want to check out the Destinator at

destinator1.com

I just put one in myself and it's excellent. The PA also double as a MP3 player that plays 30 hours of music. I also plays the recorded cartoon shows for my son on the device. With the 1GB flash, it carries about 8 hours of TV programs.

It synch with Outlook on your PC so you can pick an entry in your Microsoft Outlook address book and just say "go".

The down side is that the unit doesn't have the gyro sensor and wheel speed sensor so when you get into a tunnel, it won't be able to show where you are. However, the new GPS receiver is so fast that as soon as you get out, it pick up where you are and continues to navigate. It's only $300 if you already have a PDA with a flash memory card.

The best part is that you can plan for your entire trip at home on your PC and then download the itinerary to your PDA and go.

The package is also upgradable so in the future it won't get out of date and you can move it from car to car.

Mrs. Cooper has the after market Alpine in her C4S and it is a great system. The speed of response if much improved from the OEM system that was in her previous BMW 740i. It is mounted in the lower part of the front instrument fascia and I think this might be a better spot than the typical location which is higher up.
