Question $20K on mods or $60K on a GT2

I have the opportunity to buy a new GT2 for 10K under sticker, an X50 with 2K miles, or stock 996tt (plenty around).
If I buy the stock or X-50 turbo, what mods should I consider with a ~$20K budget?
Or should I just go with the GT2?
I currently own a modified 993tt which I track 5-6 times a year and love driving on the street. I plan on doing the same with my next p-car.
Any suggestions?

Konrad

The decision boils down to the following: do you want (or need) to deal with the characteristics of AWD versus RWD?, each requires their own technique.

If a daily driver then the TT allows for "autopilot", if for "experience" i.e constantly sweaty palms and a permanently engaged mind with oodles of intimidation, then the GT2.

They are different and no amount of comparison or modification will make them comparable. There is no right answer and the French developed a saying along time ago "a chaque son gout" (to each his own taste).

There seems to be a pervasive desire on this web site to own the "best "or "perfect" Porsche, maybe it's the insecurity complex of high achievers. Listen to the Porsche marketing; they strive for excellence and both choices are "excellent".

I switched from the TT to the GT2 because I was disatisfied with the understeer in the TT. Some have the mechanical apptitude and inclination to "modify" these characteristics and kudos to them. I enjoy the characteristics of RWD (European tradionalist) and chose to go that route, hoping to grow into the handling characteristics.

Hope this helps!

Konrad......Colm's post is good 'food for thought'....(a Wisconsin phrase.....we pretty much subsist on cheese & beer here) .

Anyway....my background is similer to yours, as for the application of the vehical.
All I will say is, I believe you should find a way to drive the GT2 & judge for yourself. It sounds as though you are comfortable w/the 993 on the track (and comfortable with it after you get home).....so I can tell you, from experience, that you will find the 996TT will be a 'hoot'.
You do need the 20K....but the end result is a pretty awesome car(IMHO). I have never driven a GT-2 .......I'm sure it's incredible......but personally not a 'fit' for what I want (and need) from the car.....good luck, keep us posted....GreggT

I have one hundred miles on my 03 GT 2. Last night was the first night I really got to drive the car since it was delivered Tuesday. I switched from an 02TT to the GT 2.

Visually: The car is stunning, guards red. I have seen many pictures of modified 996 TT's on this board and they are all stunning cars. I have yet to see one that looks better than the GT 2. I have seen some modified 996 TT's that look as good.

It lacks some creature comforts. I was not aware the GT 2 did not come with the Bose sound system until after the guy backed if off the trailer in my driveway. I am a music buff so I was dissappointed. Colm said "who needs a radio with the sound the engine produces." Well said. No power seats or sunroof. I miss the sunroof. GT2 seats though not totally power allow for sufficient adjustment. I am 5-10" and got the adjustment perfect for my height.

Performance: I am not as sophisticated in this area as most on this board. I can tell you I was initally a little dissapointed in the feel of acceleration of the GT 2. I don't know what I was expecting but the GT 2 doesn't feel like it pulls like the TT did. Maybe it is the lack of AWD. But after driving some more last night I think I am going to be satisfied. I have yet to go through all the gears at full throttle. I keep running out of road. The GT 2 definitely drives much different than the tt but in a very good way. I can feel the road and the car is extremely responsive. My salesman told me to be sure and have the car pointed in the right direction when I accelerate hard. Good advice. I am not use to having to worry about spinning the tires when I accelerate in a Porsche. GT 2 requires that discipline.

Modifying a stock TT requires knowledge, patience and someone you can trust with your car. I have very little knowledge about engine performance, no patience and there are no tuners anywhere near where I live. The only reason I bought a GT 2 is because every morning I read the post on this site by you guys and get some vicarious pleasure from all the mods you are doing to your cars. If I had access to a tuner and the patience I would seriously consider doing the mods to a tt.

I now understand what a true work of art the TT is. Porsche created an awesome driving experience in a car with tons of creature comforts. GT 2 is a different animal. I look forward to getting the car on the track in Dec with Hurley Haywood. He will be my instructor when I go to Brumos Porsche driving school.

My 2 cents.

Konrad, where abouts in NC are you located? I'd love to see that 993TT if you're local

I am in Greensboro, not too far from Elon. E-mail me privately if you want to look at my car (I will probably trade it in within a week or so!)
