The only people who seam to want to go with me are the sport bikes. These guys seam to always be ready.

Oh yeah! Forgot to mention those guys! Day 2 with the car. A guy on a sport bike goes way out of his way to get up next to me. Nails it, slows down, nails it, does a wheelie, nails it again. I don't bite... If it were a road course, I'd certainly give it a shot. But, a drag race in 5 pm traffic, forget about it.

Had a similar one two days ago, this one with his poor girlfriend hanging on the back as he lifted the front wheel off the ground and took of.

As for exotics... There are a ton of exotics here in Scottsdale. In fact, just in my neighborhood alone there's a Maclaren (somehow converted to be street legal in the US, the one that was in Road and Track a few months back), a Murcielago, a Barchetta, several 360s and 996TTs, two Maseratis, a Z8, a few AMGs and several other interesting cars. I have never once had a challenge from an exotic... although it could be fun. Late at night, a deserted road, the light changes...

As for those that just want a show... I think that's probably true much of the time with the beaters and many of imports. They just want to see you nail it and disappear off into the sunrise. Come to think of it, I really enjoyed the first time I saw a 928 disappear in front of me as I tried to keep pace in my dilapidated Volkswagen in my freshman year of college.

Lastly, thankfully I've never been shot at! But, in my younger days, I did have a tendency to attract more than my share of the road rage poster boys. On one occassion, I was driving my new 89 Mustang GT when this guy that looked like he came out of deliverance appeared at my window. He was yelling and screaming, insisting I get out of the car to fight. To this day, I'm not sure why. Any way, he's got no front teeth, ugly as sin, and looks meaner than hell. Just then, I noticed the light turned green and so I took off. He ran back to his car, got in and went after me. I remembered an upcoming freeway on ramp and made a difficult maneuver across the traffic and onto the freeway. Only, I'd forgotten that this was an odd ball freeway with two on ramps in less than a quarter mile. Not surprisingly, in my rearview mirrior I see him barreling up the next on ramp like a bat out of hell. But, he was in a mid 80s Accord, and I had a good 75 HP on him. So, I nailed it and never looked back until well into the triple digits. Have no idea what ever happened to him, although my guess is that he's now locked away somewhere in a Federal facility.

Yeah Oak is a really nice guy. But I think his car is sorta like his Mr. Hyde alter ego with its "stock" setup.

Hey Oak, when are we gonna meet up again?

Hamann, You know me, I'm up and about all the time. I'm usually the lone wolf at dawn patrol. By the time you guys get going, I'm usually on my second Latte. Let me know when you guys meet up, I don't want to crash the party. I have to maintain my friendly decorum.

quote:
Upon reflection, maybe my description was poor. What I'm trying to say is, take an otherwise nice looking car like the stock Z06 (which I think is really nice looking), add really tacky looking aftermarket stuff (e.g., non-matching colored louvers over the tail lights, extra badging in off colors in odd places, add on body kits that don't quite go with the natural curves of the car, etc.), and you can make an otherwise nice looking vehicle look kind of stupid.

Just to reiterate, I drove a Z06 until about a month ago. It's a great car. Looks great, runs great, etc. I just happened to run across another guy who made his Z06 look kind of stupid with silly stuff that didn't really compliment the car.

As for the challenge... I don't usually like to banter about which car is faster, better, etc. It's usually taken out of context, cross posted (e.g., to my friends on the Corvette Forum), and creates unnecessary controversy. But, in this case, I can comment knowledgeably about both cars and in such a way that controversy is remote.

As I posted on the Z06 list about two months ago, the performance of the Z and the 996TT is so close on a road course, that the best driver would win. So, yes, I'd gladly take up the challenge - stock Z06 with another amateur driver vs. me in a stock 996TT. It would be a great race and I have no doubt that the best driver would win. The car would have little to do with the outcome.

On the other hand, as I also posted on the Corvette Forum (Z06 Forum specificially), the Z06 would win in an autocross - assuming equal drivers. So, while I'd also take up that challenge (I just like racing), I'd expect to lose unless the Z driver was inexperienced (or a crappy experienced driver).

So, what the heck, if there's anyone in Phoenix that wants to take up the challenge, let's do it. But, Road Atlanta, that's a bit too far to go for track time when there's 30+ race events here in the Valley each year.

Yours in speed, respect for fellow gearheads, and objective performance evaluation.

P.S. We should also do 0-100-0 while we're at it!

anything to the thought that color might have something to do with it?

in my guards red 86 951, i'd get messed with all the time - ricers, bikes, etc....my current 951 is satin black metallic and it doesn't draw the challenges, even tho its much quicker/faster than my 86 was. other than color, they are nearly identical - same C2 wheels, etc..

i also think i tend to slip under the radar (literally) on the highway with the darker car....

racer63,

What track events do you go to? I'm a frequent participant at NASA, ASRA, and Pro autosports events. Have I seen you? I used to drive a silver S2000 but now usually run a Honda Civic hatchback.

I think it's those 6 bottles of NOS that you have. I've seen them in your pix
