A guy on a sport bike goes way out of his way to get up next to me. Nails it, slows down, nails it, does a wheelie, nails it again. I don't bite... If it were a road course, I'd certainly give it a shot. But, a drag race in 5 pm traffic, forget about it.

Had a similar one two days ago, this one with his poor girlfriend hanging on the back as he lifted the front wheel off the ground and took of.

As for exotics... There are a ton of exotics here in Scottsdale. In fact, just in my neighborhood alone there's a Maclaren (somehow converted to be street legal in the US, the one that was in Road and Track a few months back), a Murcielago, a Barchetta, several 360s and 996TTs, two Maseratis, a Z8, a few AMGs and several other interesting cars. I have never once had a challenge from an exotic... although it could be fun. Late at night, a deserted road, the light changes...

As for those that just want a show... I think that's probably true much of the time with the beaters and many of imports. They just want to see you nail it and disappear off into the sunrise. Come to think of it, I really enjoyed the first time I saw a 928 disappear in front of me as I tried to keep pace in my dilapidated Volkswagen in my freshman year of college.

Lastly, thankfully I've never been shot at! But, in my younger days, I did have a tendency to attract more than my share of the road rage poster boys. On one occassion, I was driving my new 89 Mustang GT when this guy that looked like he came out of deliverance appeared at my window. He was yelling and screaming, insisting I get out of the car to fight. To this day, I'm not sure why. Any way, he's got no front teeth, ugly as sin, and looks meaner than hell. Just then, I noticed the light turned green and so I took off. He ran back to his car, got in and went after me. I remembered an upcoming freeway on ramp and made a difficult maneuver across the traffic and onto the freeway. Only, I'd forgotten that this was an odd ball freeway with two on ramps in less than a quarter mile. Not surprisingly, in my rearview mirrior I see him barreling up the next on ramp like a bat out of hell. But, he was in a mid 80s Accord, and I had a good 75 HP on him. So, I nailed it and never looked back until well into the triple digits. Have no idea what ever happened to him, although my guess is that he's now locked away somewhere in a Federal facility.

Yours in speed,

For some reason, mini-vans and dualy-trucks always want to race me at the light.

Around Highway 101 and 280 between SF and San Jose , I would say my Turbo gets the most aggressive driver behavior from the following newer cars : 1) Audi A4/S4 2) BMW M5 ( but not M3) 3) Rustangs .
OTOH, Ferrari, Vette, AMG MBZ ,Viper , and most ricer drivers leave me alone.

LOL I know what you mean... M5s are always trying to bait me at the same spot. Since I've put on the straight pipes, most people leave me alone and merely want me to get on it...

The funniest story I have (although it could have been ugly) was a kid in my neighborhood with a souped up Mustang. He pulled out behind me and obviously wanted to go. I thought okay let's have some fun, so I nailed it. We came up on a hard left bend in the road and I kept my foot planted pulling away from him by leaps and bounds. Unfortuneatly for him he kept his foot in it and all I saw in my rear view mirror was his car spinning around into the oncoming lane then into someone's driveway.

I felt so bad I stopped and turned around to make sure he was okay and didn't hit something. Lucky for him there was no oncoming traffic and he missed hitting an oak tree by three feet.

Needless to say he has never challenged me again.

The other story was a sport bike on the freeway, I usually don't mess with sport bike's as stock bikes can easily run 10's in the 1/4 mile so unless you are CJV forget about it. But I raced this bike from about 70 mph and pulled him big time. After I slowed down he pulled up and hung his head in shame. I think it suprised both of us to be honest.

Porsche there is no substitute!

Buddy , that story could have had a tragic ending for you also . Say the kid wiped out a family in the other direction . You would be charged also - worse if you leave the scene , since witnesses always pop up later. That's why I ignore these kids - it's not always easy but goes with the territory of owning an iconic car. Even if all you do is give a kid in a rice rocket next to you a friendly quick spurt to make his day, if that kid is then encouraged by your show of speed to rip down the freeway and rear end someone , some soccer mom who witnessed the whole " innocent " thing may pull over and give the highway patrol your license number for "racing" him . <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />

MKW, that was probably the best way I've ever heard the issue of street racing vs. not street racing addressed. Most of the time, on discussion boards/mailing lists, what ensues is more of a pissing match and an exchange of insults. Calm, rational counter point is a nice change in regards to this topic!

I don't really have a strong opinion one way or the other about street racing vs. not - except to say that I'm a lot more careful now than I used to be. I had several similar experiences to Buddy's many years ago. Once (mid 80s), a guy in a Pontiac Grand Am decided to try to hang with me in my new 86 RX7 around a corner and ended up tagging a guard rail. Another time ('90 Twin Turbo Z right after they came out), a guy in a 944S tried the same thing. He ended up tagging a curb. Fortunately, no one was hurt in either case. Still, I tend to be a little more careful now... but I do occassionally go for it.

For the most part, I now keep it to the track... And now, as luck would have it, people just follow me off the race track. A few years ago, for example, I went off at turn 1 at Willow Springs (playing with a slightly new line in practice) and two guys followed me off in exactly the same spot. The first guy's car looked like it had been the subject of machine gun fire as the rocks that were thrown up behind me ended up pelting his car - breaking the windshield, puncturing the radiator, etc.

Back to the street... I will admit to an occassional stop light drag race. But, I try to be very careful about the time and place, as well as the opponent (avoiding guys that look like they got their license last week, and those that look like road rage candidates). And I keep it short. Pull a few car lenghths and shut down.

I'm not one to make judgments one way or the other - about street racing vs. not street racing. I feel that's an individual choice. Obviously, its better to do it on the racetrack. But, its probably not the crime of the century to rev it up at the stoplight now and again. As long as you keep your wits about you and don't do anything stupid.

Just my $0.02.

I would agree with most of the comments, if you want to go really fast the best and safest place is the track. I have attended many track events and enjoy my time there. However, once in a while the old competitive juices flow on the street and I may indulge in a quick stop light showdown. You do have to be careful as mentioned before about who you race and where you race. I am a responsible adult who would not want to see anyone get hurt due to anything I or the person I am racing did.

Keep the shiny side up! (it goes faster that way)

racer63,

Kinda off topic, but you owned a 90 TTZ? How'd you like it? I think they are fantastic cars...

To contribute to the thread, I drive like a relaxed old man on the street, I only play hard at the track (well I'll drive spiritedly on the occasional open twisty road where I feel no one else is in danger.)

On the street, given the uncertainty, I feel there is nothing to prove. Sure it is nice to be acknowledged, but I don't trust the other guys actions, it can get way too dangerous. I'd rather bring myself down than bring someone else along with me.

I must say that I get more respect from other cars than I do of them trying to race. The only car that I have had an encounter with was a Supra that runs mid 11s on 95 south. I was on my way home from a car show and so was he.
