Post Thicker Steering Wheel Option question

Hi guys, I'm looking to getting a new TT and new to the board.

I have become used to very thick steering wheels (my current car is an M5 and it has a VERY thick wheel) and the Porsche wheel is just so thin. Has anyone ordered the "thicker steering wheel option"? Does it make a lot of difference? Also, I would like to get the carbon fiber option - can I get a thicker wheel with the carbon fiber option too?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi and welcome here!

There's been a thread about that topic recently, have a look at the list!...

To answer your question quickly: I have a Techart 34cm wheel, which is absolutely great. Smaller and thicker than the original one. Perfect.

Greetings,
--Pierre

EDIT: here's the thread I mentionned: <a href="http://forums.rennlist.com/cgi-bin/rennforums/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=5;t=003992" target="_blank">http://forums.rennlist.com/cgi-bin/rennforums/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=5;t=003992</a>

Like you I came from the M5 (actually stayed with the M5 plus the TT) and had the same disappointment with the TT steering wheel.
Like Pierre I got the Techart one and have been 100% satisfied.
The thicker wheel option was not available as an 03 option I believe.

It would be nice to compare the Porsche product to the Techart, Ruf etc. before ordering.

IMHO, the stock one is not enough.

Congrats on car.

For my Techart wheel, costs were:
- wheel (34cm, black leather, no logo): CHF 922.-
- airbag: CHF 397.-
- hub: CHF 157.-
- installation: CHF 44.-

Total: CHF 1520.-, roughly USD 1178 (hey, the dollar's sinking!...)

Pierre's TA wheel is different than your TA version - his is a smaller diameter steering wheel, hence the new (and different shaped) air bag requirement.

Thanks for the help, guys - but I take it that no one here has any knowledge of the factory option for the thicker steering wheel?

Jack's correct: the 34cm wheel can accomodate the standard airbag, so I had to buy the one from Techart too.

Sy, the factory option for a thicker wheel is available for the GT3. So you probably can have it for all 996 as well.

Below is a PIC of TechArt's reworked Porsche factory wheel which utilizes the stock airbag....
