weight of the 997tt
I had read of weight-reducing measures in the 997tt shaving significant pounds. But, this edition of Excellence indicates the 997tt is 100 lbs heavier thant the 996tt. Can anybody figure this out? AS

They did in fact use weight reducing measures, but I believe this being a larger car, with stiffer chassis, 19" wheels, larger 380mm PCCB new gen and more electronic and safety equipment, made it a bit heavier, however with a favorable Hp/lb ratio. Not sure what weight Excellence posted but it would be interesting to know if it was tested weight with all fluids and full gas tank or other quoted weight. Sport Auto tested it at slighly less than 3500lbs. The GT2 should come in at about 3300lbs with 520HP.

This same approach is used by the U.S government, where they plan a budget that is say... $100 billion more than the current budget...and then decide to only make the new budget $75 billion higher. The announcement however becomes "we've cut spending".

By recollection, Excellence says 3388 vs 3492 ( I could be off a few, but that's the ballpark.)
The 19 inch wheels add about 2 lbs. each.
Are variable vane turbos much heavier? Is the intercooler bigger? Does PASM weigh much? Is it all in the new front diff? Are the new headlights made of depleted uranium?
Chassis stiffening generally isn't 100 lbs, unless they are all sharing the cabriolet platform.
I always thought our cars were heavy enough. I'd rather give up hp for weight savings, if the ratio is constant. A cabriolet tip is going to be dangerously close to Mercedes SL weight. AS

Three Wheelin'
if you compare a 996tt to the 997tt side by side it's quite obvious the 997tt has much more girth. I'm actually surprised they claim only 100lbs difference. It looks like it would be much more.

not totally acurate and probably doesnt matter but the above issues are why I no longer have the mufflers and cats (55 pounds) spare and tools (35 pounds) LWFW (11 pounds) GT3 seats (60 pounds) battery (35 pounds) CD changer/rear wiper (13 pounds). Car runs great, no problems, reliable and still appears stock. That crap adds up!!! (please no comments on the above weight reduction program it is as acurate as can be and for conversational purposes only)

Tom,
What do your tires weigh compared to originals? There may be a few lbs. there too.
When you changed out your wing, was there hardware that went too? AS

Not me. When I was checking tires for my Elise, I was impressed by the wide variation in tire weights. In a car that light, it makes a bigger diference. I just wanted you to get all the credit for the weight reduction efforts(another 35 lbs). That number of hundred dollar bills also shaves a few ounces. AS

Tom,
I couldn't be a surgeon. The associated swelling of my head would preclude wearing a helmet. On the other hand, I would think the surgeon would wear the helmet on his hands, as a head injury is only of minor importance. AS
