Caught a ride in a new Murcielago yesterday! After spending a very therapeutic and necessary 4 hours detailing the outside of my TT, I drove over to a local independent dealership where a friend works to have their in-house guy do the interior of the TT for me. When I got there, I noticed that the Lamborghini wasn't in its usual spot in the showroom as was told that the owner (John) finally decided to take it out and put some miles on it. And ... my buddy, Alex told me that if I stuck around, I could catch a ride in it. Naturally I stuck around.
My impressions ... In two words, awesome car. It delivers its power in a very predictable and linear fashion with the sound that only a 12 cylinder engine can make. (That being said, it was a relatively quiet exhaust -- personally I would like to hear more of that magnificant sound!) It was very smooth and stable at high speeds (we stopped at 130mph) and seemed to have lots of lateral grip as well. The TT by contrast is more nimble but less stable as you would expect. Of course we did not push it too far for obvious reasons, but enough to get a feel for some of what it could do in braver and more experienced hands.
We did see what the straight-line acceleration was like WOT. My guess is that my slightly modified TT (Unichip, Fabspeed exhaust and BMC filter)is quicker 0-120mph but that sometime after, the Lambo would have an advantage.
The PS to this story is that on the way home, John pulled in behind me in the Murcielago and we were able to find a stretch of deserted road to get a real world comparison of acceleration. As I expected, I was able to pull a bit quicker than he could to 125mph which is where I let up. Whether or not he was fully into the accelerator, I don't know, but it was a treat in any case.
BTW,an interesting bit on break in for the Lamborghini. All the manual says is to let the car idle for 5 minutes and then to keep it under 5000 RPM for the next 15 minutes. After that you are free to do as you choose. Seems strange and I probably wouldn't be doing full throttle acceleration sessions with it so soon, but it was hard to resist the impulse and challenge, I am sure. Anyway, what started out as a pretty average day turned into something pretty special and very cool. My buddy Alex assures me that we get another chance to really drive it again before too long. I can't wait!

LOL I might just get one because of the break-in procedure <img border="0" alt="[jumper]" title="" src="graemlins/jumper.gif" /> I know it's one hell of a sports car and I do agree with you on the realitivly quit exhaust but I think TUBI does do a system for the Murcielago..

Regarding the break-in.....it is really basic engineering. In very simplistic terms, Stress = Force divided by unit area. Assuming the Lambo and the TT are of comparable horsepower, the Lambo pistons/cylinders are experiencing 1/2 the stress because there are twice as many as the Porsche.

I remember seeing a special on high end cars a while back already on either the Discovery or The Learning channels and Lamborghini was highlighted in that every car they turn out gets test driven around 100 miles by one of their top test drivers to make sure the car meets its standards before the customer is given the keys. That was for the Diablo's at least and I'm not sure if they do this anymore but if so maybe that's why the break in isn't that critical.

I thought Porsche also took out each car of the line and up to max speed on the Autobahn as part of their quality control?? (Maybe every fifth car or something).
