996 Warranty and Competition
I've been told by a few sources, and seen it written,(Technical Notes-- Excellence mag May 2001) That Porsche does not want customers to participate in competition events in 996's with racing slicks, and that this would void your warranty. Is this true ? This would seem to be a weird position for Porsche of all companies to take, and a big turnaround since the 993. I expect this from Mazda, but PORSCHE ? What gives ? First SUV's now this ?

Congrats on the new car!
As for the slicks issue, I believe this applied to the normally aspirated 996 which lacks a dry sump oiling system. (BTW, the 996TT does have a dry sump.) Supposedly, there could be an oil starvation issue given the lateral g's that the 996 might produce with slicks--hence the warranty disclaimer.

Jack,
That's a relief, however I found out that Porsche Motorsports sells a '996 Oilkit' for the 996 C2 and C4 to prevent oil starvation in thoses cars. It's apparantly a must for normally aspirated 996's for ANY competition, even DE, or autocross.

Robin,
There are plenty 996's running in DE's and autocrosses with R-compound tires without the oil starvation kit and without any problems. I believe that kit would be absolutely necessary for cars with aggressive suspension and racing slicks.
