Post Fundamental Differences

I know this has probably been hotly debated, and I may be completely off base, but what the heck, maybe a new post will do some good. At the very least, maybe I will learn something.

If you take a stock TT and properly lower it, fit proper tires and wheels, change the nose (along with the radiator) and wing, upgrade the power and the brakes and lighten it up a bit by ridding it of a spare tire, rear seats, etc, etc., don't you end up with a slightly heavier (weight of front wheel drive components) 4wd GT2?

Chad,
I apologize for appearing ignorant, but what are the FD's beyond those that I mentioned?

It is substantially lighter, has a different clutch, less sound deading material, short shifter, different intercoolers,no sunroof, fenders rolled at the factory,no rear wiper, and 2wd. These are just a few of the differences. The list goes on. Is it better? Well thats a personal question IMO.

OK, my etc.'s were meant to cover those. So let me restate the question this way...

Take a Stock TT and add bodywork, wheels, tires, engine power, brakes, suspension, radiator change, intercooler upgrade, seats, short shifter, tear off the wiper, better clutch and add or subtract the other stuff I am missing from my list of differences.

In the end, wouldn't you have a 4wd GT2 that weighs 200-250 pounds heavier than a stock GT2?

Couldn't that all be done in the aftermarket realm for less than the difference in price between a factory TT and a factory GT2?

Better to start with a stock X50 (same engine, intercoolers and exhaust as a GT2) then lighten it, etc..

Misidi & all,

So is the exhaust system on a factory X50 TT package the same as the exhaust on a GT-2?

How doest the exhaust differ from the one on a stock TT?

Thanks

Chad,
It sounds like there is more than meets the eye! When you find the book I would appreciate the name and publisher. Also, what was the other one you mentioned in previous posts about tuning? I think "Bell" was the guys last name.

Then why does Techart, 9ff, etc... sell a tranny oil cooler specifically for the X50?? (Techart's part is called X50 transmission cooler!!)

Chad,
I was talking to a Porsche salesman that accompanied us yesterday on our meet. We ended up stopping at the Jack Daniels Dealership on the way back and got into a discussion about the tilted radiator. He said they did a conversion and it required the nose section (of course) as well as two radiator supports that simply bolted in place to change the angle of the radiator so the top was tilted forward. Quite easy it seems and IMHO a necessary change if one goes to the GT2 nose or Techart nose for that matter.

KPV - Techart offers a kit called Upgrade Kit Watercooler that does just that: repositions intercooler.
I think I am going to order it soon!!
Anyone know if X50 has tranny cooler?? If not, I will get the Techart one too...

This is the GT2/GT3 transmission. You can see the oil cooler on the side:

The stripped car you propose would be considerably noisier than the GT 2 which already runs 8 to 10 dBA louder than the X50. The 'cosmetic' insulation used on the GT2 lightens it substantially but is acousticaally and thermally inefficient.
A stripped X50 could have Mega-Temp Insulation applied to it at less than 5 pounds total weight.
It would be quieter and both cooler in the Summer and warmer in the Winter than the standard Turbo insulation! Since it is only one millimeter thick, there would be no problem with vehicular reassembly if you did do the project;and you would have bragging rights that you had aircraft insulation in your X50!
