VS,

2 steps -

(1) Carefully pull off the outer platic cover. Work it off with no tools just your hands.

(2) That will leave the backplate which has a little metal cage that blocks the bolt you need to get out. Carefully also work this piece out as well. Working it side to side and pulling out. There are little plastic hooks that will unclip. Once you do it on the first one, the second will be easy.

Took me a while to figure out. The dealer did not even know how...

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Even with the covers removed, you can still push the button to adjust the height. I set both to the lowest position before installing the bar.

Good luck...

VS,

I was giving instructions on removing the bolt for the shoulder strap on the b-pillar.

Is that what you meant by d-ring ?

Norm,
This is exactly what I needed, thank you! Still cannot get past the steel backplate

It would help to know where those plastic clips are: somewhere at the back inside the B-pillar or in the front at the back side of the plate...

I'll keep pulling

VS,

the clips are all around. The only way to release is by pulling it out side to side. Rocking it. You can carefully use a screwdriver to lightly pry between the bolt head and the back of the cage. It will eventually come straight out. The second one will only take aa few seconds. The first one takes so long until you figure out exactly how much pressure and method to use...

Done!
Norm, it was exacty like you said: the second one came out in seconds. The greatest challenge was to overcome the mental block and start rocking/pulling "like you wanna break it".

Thanks for your help!

VS,

You're welcome. That was my biggest mental block too. I was afraid of breaking the plastic hooks. But fortunately they just pop out...

Glad you were successful!

Thank you for the feedback. I decided I would get the GT3 seats anyway, but for a different reason now

I understand now that the 6pt harness works well with the sport seat. But I doubt I would use full harness every day going to work, movies etc. Or at least my wife wouldn't

VS, installing a six point harness in no way means you remove/cannot use the 3 point belts. The stock belts stay in, and the 6 point belts are added usually using an I-bolt (which replaces the stock bolt that anchors the 3 point belt) and a clip on bracket that the add to the tunnel side seat belt receptor. I have the GT 3 Seat, with 6 point harness and stock belts for street use installed that way.

Just thought you should know.

Question

This brings up something I have been wondering for a while. Is putting GT3 seats, a rollbar and harnesses in a daily street car reasonable?

I really don't like the seats in my 01 991 turbo, they are even less supportive than the sports seats in my 99 996 (which weren't _that_ supportive). They are especially bad for autox and DE, but even on the street they are annoying.

Also, does anyone have a picture of the GT3 seats? How about a suggestion for a good rollbar that would fit a 01 turbo? I would like something as factory looking as possible.

Thanks,
-Randy

Randy,
I couldn't agree more: the standard seats are not that great for spirited driving. Unless you use the 6-point harness that is, then it is fine.
I've just put in the harness and "test driving" it is a lot of fun. But driving with it on the day-to-day basis is a bit too much

A good place for GT3 seats is www.carnewal.com this is where mine are coming from. You will find pictures there as well.

The rollbar that fits Turbo. IMHO, the "best" choice is the Porsche rollbar for 996. It looks kinda sexy, too. Brey Krause and DAS make rollbars as well: they are a little less expensive and the installation is a bit easier, AFAIK.

The biggest turn off with rollbar is that once it is in, you cannot use the rear seats. And you wouldn't want to put in and out all the time
