Shift points in turbo cars
Here's a question exposing some ignorance.For the purpose of aceleration, is the best shift point in a turbo'd car one that catches the fat part of the torque curve in each gear, or is it at the power peak, or is it at the red line?
Clearly, in a standard tt with the flat torque peak in the middle of the rev range, catching the fat part of the torque curve would require shifting no higher than 6000, and possibly even lower.
The engine builder of an aluminum normally aspirated Chevy that I used to run in vintage recommended shifting several hundred rpm's past the horsepower peak, to allow catching the peak after each upshift. That engine reached max hp at 7200, so shifts were best at 7500. But, that's in a "cammy" engine with less low down torque. Any answers? Perhaps this is an area where our drag racing friends are more expert. AS
