Ah, all you young kiddies. I remember all this stuff like it was yesterday. Of course, I don't remember yesterday all that well either.
Angie Dickinson was in Gumball Rally? It must have been a tiny part because I don't remember her. BTW I saw it in the theater when it was released. Ferrari Daytona in Dolby sound.
Yates started the Cannonball race to protest the national 55 mph speed limit that President Nixon enacted to help with the gas shortage. The safety ***** took up the cause when the gas shortage eased.
In the One Lap, although there appears to be no reason to speed between tracks, a few people that entered have posted on forums that you pretty much have to go ***** out. You need time to check over and prep your car for the next track, make repairs and like that.
As for the law and the Gumball, read up on the sites. It started this year in San Francisco, and within about 30 miles the cops had impounded a bunch of cars. One of the southern states (Alabama?) declared that Gumballers would be arrested on sight, whether they were speeding or not.

pig4bill (aka: older folk <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> ),
Respectfully, I believe some corrections are in order.

In 2001 the route was essentially the same with the exception that the cars were loaded on the, then completed, Chunnel to continue onward to Russia. In 2002, it was the first year the Gumball3000 was here in the states. This is the one I participated in. It ran from NY to LA with the awards ceremony at the Playboy Mansion. In 2003, it ran from SF to Miami. The law effects are totally variable from jail time in extreme cases to waves in the better cases. It has always been a crap shoot. There used to be a prize. Times have definitely changed. I have this entry form in my possession. It would have been nice to have the entry fee at that time. But then again, I was just a youngster!!

1. That was not Angie Dickenson. If that stuntwoman thought it was, she was sneaking into the actors' stash of powder that was popular at the time.
3. I didn't say this year was the first year. "It started this year in San Francisco" means the start of this year's race was in San Francisco.

For all you left coasters- the Car & Driver One lap of America 04 will be headed WEST. Starts at the Tire rack in South Bend- Track events at Heartland Park (topeka) Pikes Peak Intl, Sears Point, Las Vegas, Pueblo Motorsports Park (colorado) Hallett (tulsa) Road America, and finish with the skid pad at the Tire Rack.
4th and 5th overall last year were Pcars-Its great fun, lots of good guys (and gals) great stories, semi legal (unlike the Gumball) with the real speed on the tracks. We will be going back with the 993TT(hopefully with some seat time and the bugs out of the car) Heres a chance to show your stuff and COMPETE against some good drivers and fast cars. HP (minimum 500) Consistencny, reliability, and no driver errors are required. Go fast on the track (some of which you may never have seen before your ONE recon lap), survive the over the road sections (potholes, weather, animals and minivans) and with a little luck you may get near the top ten. Any takers?
