Red face 1 quart per 500 miles. Excessive?

I just put another quart of engine oil into my 2002 X50 after only 500 miles. For the first 1900 miles, it burned a full 3 quarts!!

If it goes the rate it is now (500 miles a quart), I will need 100 bottles of engine oil by the time it reaches the end of the factory 50K mile warranty!!!

Excessive? Should I talk to the service department or wait?

Thanks.

Believe it or not, this is quite normal. The oil burn will go down gradually up until about 15K miles. The first 5000 is the worst but it does not get much better until ~ 15K. Mine pretty much stopped buring oil then... I have 20K on the car now. As a point of reference, I went through 6 qts in the first 5K I had the car. When I had my stereo done, I had the guy install a oil container holder in the trunk so that I always had 5 qts with me at all times!

There is an old post you can find in the archives about a break in procedure that helps seat the rings. (It involves repeated open throttle runs to higher rpm's and backing off to about 3000 to build negative cylinder pressure)multiple times in sequential gears.
It takes a while for synthetic oil engines to break in. My Elise 190R came with mineral oil in the pan for break-in, then a switch to synthetic for harder use. My X50 settled down in the first 4000 miles- but that means about 1 quart every 1500 miles. AS

My "02 Turbo averaged a quart every 360 miles for the first 1500 miles, 1qt every 520 miles up to 4500 miles, and has averaged 1qt every 1200 miles since.

I followed the recommended break in.

City driving has higher oil consumption, versus extended highway driving.

Quick Reply: 1 quart per 500 miles. Excessive?
