Yuck. I have an '00 tt with the basic black interior. The center
console apparently has a thin soft rubber texture layer on it,
and this stuff is starting to peel off on the edge of the indentation
for the hand brake lever. Luckily it's black underneath too, but
the peeling is still ugly...
Anyone else ever see this? I guess the only solution is to replace
the part. Or maybe it can be completely peeled and refinished?

good reason to remove textured stuff and have it painted. any decent painter can do it.

The texture is commonly called soft touch. If you completely re paint or dye the whole thing, it would give a complete color appearance. ( I would use SEM plastic and vinyl dye ) But there would be the spots with out proper texture. It would probibly be overlooked. I would find a very good one for sale and replace it. Try ebay, they are pretty cheap.

Good time to upgrade and have it painted. I had mine painted speed yellow to match the seats came out awesome!!
