Default 2 wheel drive conversion for the 996TT?

sorry, did a search and the search feature seems to be broken.

i've been lurking on the 993TT board and there's a thread on a 2WD conversion. it seems to be relatively easy.

is it easy to do on the 996TT or is it next to impossible because of PSM?

Seems like the whole car is upset to the point that watching out for a good deal on a GT2 is a much safer bet, IMHO

I'll let you know how good it is after next weekend. I'll be racing my TT at Road Atlanta in the PCA sprint race and hope that the 2wd conversion was worth it.

There are a couple ways to do it. One is just disconnect and remove the drive shaft that goes to the front wheels and pull the ABS/PSM fuse, not recommended at all.

The next way is to pull the ABS/PSM fuse, take out the drive shaft to the front wheels, take out the front diff., replace the front axles with GT2 stub axles/tension bolts, change to GT2/3 wheel carriers, and add a rear diff. You must also change the front drop links and go with a coil over system, either GT2/3 or Motons. You'll need to change to a GT2/3 sway bar as well.

Then, of course you have to set your ride height, camber, caster, toe, corner balance, and you're done. I think I covered it.

Forgot to mention that you should also upgrade to GT2/3 rotors and calipers since your stock TT rotors and caliper's probably won't mate up to the GT2/3 wheel carriers. Then there's different brake lines, etc. etc.

That is what I'm taking to Road Atlant next week.

By the way, taking out the ABS/PSM fuse disconnects your ABS, not good for a street car.

Is there a way to convert to 2wd and retain ABS and some degree of PSM?

Zippy,

I've not tried to seperate the ABS and PSM. I would think it could be done but I found it easier to pull the fuse and add a dual master cylinder setup. Not suggested for the street.

Many World Challenge teams are running a stand alone traction control system. You could also run a stand alone ABS system, but too pricey for the street.

2wd = GT2. Sell your TT and buy a GT2.

There are a few 996TT 2-wheel drive cars running around
(and most were modified by Protomotive).
One guy is Divexxtreme (who is mostly on 6speed and became infamous with
his 10.6 quartermile on stock internals)
Another is Alex D. (another Protomotive guy and infamous because he
purportedly has the fastest 996TT in the world)
Markski's car is down getting a "little Protomotive tune right now"
Mark are you doing the 2-wheel drive thing ??
let us know.

You simply add a Cup ABS system which is standalone and hook up a few wires and thats it. The system will hook right in with the sensors and lines.

Thanks Stephen, I did not think it was "reinventing the wheel"

protomotive actually takes out the front dif. I dont know the actual trick... something about couplers.... ???? and I believe the traction still remains....

Not taking out the front diff , torque tube and front axles does not make much sense, while you are in there, reduce weight. You benefit both from less drivetrain losses, as well as around 100lbs of weight reduction.

We had a RUF RT12 rear wheel drive and a friend who drove it, didn't think that it needed the fourwheel drive. It was very stable and the traction didn't suffer.

Be interesting to see how the 997TT " lockup clutch " system works out. It was pretty good on the 959!
Big + is that it is possible that a system command could turn off drive to the front - not possible for the viscous system .

All good stuff
