do what the manual says. 0-40 Mobil-1 should be fine.

For long-running high stress situations, a 50-wt (at the high end) might
give a bit more protection by keeping a bit thicker film at the high temps,
but for most owners, the critical win is a thin enough oil at cold startup
to get flow ASAP to the upper reaches of the motor.

I don't think 15W50 is an approved oil for the 996 Turbo.

Mobil 1 5w40 is also approved, if you want something a little thicker. Also Pennzoil European formula and Motul 8100 5w40, and Conoco/Kendal GT1l 5w40.
Edit: This comes from a 7-28-05 Technical Service Bulletin I found on Renntech.org, so there should be no warranty issues.

OPC's here in Europe use Mobil 1 5W-40 not 0W 40, please notice that the closest the numbers (cold and hot) higher the shear resistance of the oil...

Does your dealer use Pennzoil 5W-40 in the 996 turbo? Maybe just me but i would not use Pennzoil in a lwanmower. I would think about another dealer if they are using Pennzoil 5W-40 in a 996 turbo.
JMO
MOBILE 1 0-40 HERE just like Porsche wants and yes it was hard for me to chage as i have always liked Castrol 20-50 or 20-40 but i think Porsche would know more about oil than me.

Mobil 1 5w40 Truck and SUV is available at some Walmarts. It's only $4/qt if you get the 5 quart jug. It has more zinc than 0w40 and the high temp high shear rating (HTHS) is 4.1 vs. 3.6 for 0w40. The downside is that it is thicker at cold temperatures than 0w40.

1. Is Joe right, especially at pertains to cars tracked??

2. Boy if you dont use EXACTLY what the dealer uses and they find out and you have a warranty issue, you in trouble!!!
