As someone said, this variable geometry turbos are very comon at least on every high performance turbo diesel engine here in Europe specially on VAG cars (Audi, Volkswagen and Seat) on both 4 and 6 cilinder engines and as far as I'm concerned (I had an Audi TDI for 7 years and 170 miles) yes,the variable action mechanism needs cleaning every 60-80k miles but its a 2h job and the rubber diaphram on the vacuum actuator sometimes tears just like our DV's but its very rare...
