Default 1st trip to the dragstrip with my EVO stg 1 996TT

Well, I just returned from the local dragway here in MI. Clear and cool, could not ask for a better day. I have been to drags many times with my other cars but this is my first Porsche and first all wheel drive vehicle. My car is an 01 TT with 11k miles running Continentals and Sunoco 94. The only mods are the EVO stage 1... DV's, K+N and GIAC programming. PSM off. My three best runs are the following: 12.0012@117.74 60ft 1.9090 1/8th mile 7.8271@91.82 RT .3839, 12.1181@117.20 60ft 1.9393 1/8th 7.8971@ 91.07 RT.3788, 12.4348@117.19 60ft 2.1408 1/8th 8.2209@92.39 RT .6112. Are these numbers the best to be expected or could this vehicle dip into the 11's. I would have expected a lower 60 ft time due to the all wheel drive since my previous rear wheel drive vehicles posted lower 60 ft times although the ET was not near as good as this TT. Is a 117 MPH trap speed consistent with these ET's. I was launching at 3000RPM with little bog and no wheel hop. I tried to launch higher and my foot slipped off the clutch at 5000 rpm and it spun the tires wildly. I thought I broke a halfshaft because the car just did not move but I recovered and went on to post a 13.20 ET anyway. I assume that one botched launch is not going to destroy the clutch, although it sure did smell for a while. I tested it on the way home and RPM's did not increase without an increase in MPH. All in all a phenomenal car. Any comments are welcome.Kevin

That sounds about right. I you get the reaction time down you should crack 11's. An exhaust might nudge you down a fuzz too. All in all not bad at all. I had a 67 Camaro that would spin tires through the 60 foot and could barely get under 13 because of traction. Flat 12's aint bad.

First of all, as a speed and Bench Racing junky, I commend you on your project!!!!
You rocked at the dragstrip:
Published times from the mags:
Motor Trend == 996TT: 11.92 @ 116.09 mph
Car and Driver == 996TT: 12.3 @ 116 mph
It sounds like you had perfect conditions and drove very well,
?? stock exhuast system ??
Congrats,
Marty K

Are you on stock weight (3500 lbs + driver)? Those are very good trap speeds and ET, congratulations.
If you got 12 seconds flat, you sure can get 11s with a slightly better 60', although you seem very experienced to run these numbers with a stage 1. This is like a "true" 500 hp car which is outstanding with 94 octane and stock turbos.
BTW slightly lower RPMs at start (2000-2400) might help you improve those 60' times a bit.

Were you running stock tire pressures?

Well thanks for the info.
Woodster: The conditions were perfect. Cold, clear and mid 50's air temp. As for the posted times by the auto rags, they did those numbers with a stock vehicle not with an extra 70-80 HP from EVO. I figure that extra HP had to be good for .3-.4 tenths. Stock Exhaust

Jean, the car is stock in every way except for the EVO package. I weigh about 220 so about 3700 total weight.
I have been to the track at least 50 times in the last 6-7 years, so I know my way around a dragstrip. I do not know my way around a dragstrip with a TT. I have had it only a couple of months and in the past I have been fighting a RWD Turbo Buick running 116 leaded fuel and 26PSI of boost. I sold everything and decfided to get a more balanced car, one that would stop and turn!

Dock 44PSI rear 36PSI front. I was not going to mess with pressures the first time out. Kevin

I would think that your 60' times would be a lot better than that! I've only done it a couple of times because I don't want to tear my car up, but when I dump it at 4,000-4,500 rpms, I feel like I have just been shot out of a cannon! It feels similar ot the 1.4's that I used to pull in my Vipers on slicks. I'm sure 1.40's are out of the question, but I would think you could easily get some 1.6's. That would dramtically reduce your ET! BTW, JohnyG, reaction times have nothing to do with ET's.

Anything less than 1.9s in the 60' or so with a Porsche is excellent, high 1.5 or 1.6 is outstanding and you will need to have it better setup for drags to get there (softer suspension and 25psi or so). Good HP for sure and great runs. I would launch at lower RPMs as mentioned above (just a guess).

Woodster: shifting was around 6300 RPM
Big Carrott: My foot slipped off the clutch over 5000 rpms. One of two things happened because the car barely moved. 1 Total wheelspin 2 total clutch slippage. Either case the car felt like it was frying the tires. The track at Milan is never prepped very well and is probably less grippy than regular pavement. I have driven Vipers and GT's and it felt nothing like them. I think a simple case of a botched launch! Kevin

At WOT, if you shift at 6300 rpm on the tach in 1st gear, the engine is very close to, if not alrady in the rev limiter (even with the increased redline provided by GIAC). In 1st gear the analog tach can not keep up with the engine acceleration, and the rev limiter is looking at the engine and not the tach.

I think a target of 6000 rpm (max) for the 1-2 shift provides the best power.

Dock, I will keep that in mind. Hopefully I will get back to the track one more time before it closes, but I am not too optimistic. Kevin
