Since I have followed the sales of the type of car for about a year now, I always felt that everyone was somewhat secretive about prices when it came to them. I'm sure some felt they spent too much. I certainly did think that of others at times.
Honestly, when I saw this car with the options I wanted I knew I was going to pay!!
Since new to this forum I will bare all about my experience.
Private guy lists car on Ebay. I call him. He says he wants 114K (9k miles 02 every option including x50 and even nav) The car retailed originally for 168K!!!! He says he paid 135k as third owner.
He says a "dealer" called and offered 95kand he turned it down.
I offer 97k he says no. I offer 99K he says know. He drops price to 104K I say cant do. He says over 40 calls no "serious" offers (read above 100k). I get nervous that the car I really want is going to be sold and I will kick myself!! After reading this forum I think heck if you want and like the car get it. I give him 104k and I am happy as a calm.
Find out he bought the car 8 months ago for 110k. I think we both got what we want.
I will welcome all opinions of the above story, both for or against, but remember, I have the perfect car that I really wanted!!!!!

Tom,

Congrats on getting the car you wanted. As far as how much you paid - well, it really shouldn't matter to no one but you. I recall buying my car a few months back and one of the first posts in reply was "How much?" Why? If a guy on the forum needs to know true market value, check eBay, Autotrader, etc. For some reason, it seems to be some sort of yardstick I guess.

Maybe it's me and my midwestern upbringing. When I was a kid, we were taught to not ask someone "how much" as it was rude. 30+ years later and a move to Southern California and it seems the opposite. I bought my car in March and my wife's cousin sees it in the garage and the first question out of her mouth is "How much?" I guess it's just some sort of geographical, cultural difference. Living in SoCal, it does seem to an ethnic issue as well, but don't feel like going there on a public forum.

Personally, I am just happy for 'ya because you got what you wanted. If you feel like it's a good deal, then you are on the bonus plan. As long as you are happy, that's all that really matters. Now it's time to start the mods. The last thing you want to do is start keeping track of "how much" when it comes to mods - unless you really want to crap yourself out.

Again, congratulations.

I agree with the above. Who cares how much you paid as long as
you got what you want and are happy. Sounds like an awesome
car, enjoy it!

"I have the perfect car that I really wanted!!!!! "

Enough said. You can negotiate all day long, and some folks enjoy the process. I'm not one of them.

I did the same thing as you did and am not regretting it. Enjoy the heck out of your new toy!

p.s. As to the "how much" and California question, as a life-long Californian, it's my opinon that it is simply rude unless you are very close. Just like asking new acquaintances "what do you do for a living?" Just not good form.

Talking

gtessier thanks for the comments, In my upbringing, it was considered rude to ask about the price of anything. What you do for a living is probably not considered as bad I guess?

I put my price story on this tread because it is I think the first question, not just Rennlisters think, but anyone who sees a car like this, just human nature. I put it out here, because it is IMHO like a "private club" to share "war" stories, kinda the most fun about this forum. So, in this forum, I think no secrets! I must admit that I dont freely tell the price of my car to many others.

This forum and the people that get involved in the replies are truely awesome

thanks all, looking forward to more good stuff!

Growing up, we never were really told much about asking what one does for a living. Within my circle of friends in the "real" world, I pretty much know what every one does. Within the "virtual" world of message boards and even casual conversation with acquaintances it isn't much concern of mine. However, during a conversation it will come up if it is relevant.

Truth be told, Glenn and I became pretty good friends last December when I sold him my BMW 850CSi (featured in the next issue of Bimmer Magazine, BTW). At a recent getogether, I gave him a ride in my 911 and he was hooked. A few days (and emails) later he was the proud owner of an '05 Turbo S. As you can probably figure out, I already know what he does for a living.

in my opinion, in this forum, there is nothing wrong with asking "how much". this is a forum to discuss all aspects of owning and buying a porsche. as far as the previous poster talking about there being an ethnic influence, you gotta be kidding! tom, you have a great car. i have an 03 tt, but with few options, except for heated seats, it is basically a base car. you work hard-the car is loaded-it's the car of your dreams-you paid a fair price. i am also a doc (internist/intensivist), but not a vascular surgeon, hence few options-drive it in good health.

Default Welcome

Being a old southern boy and a gentleman, I never ask....but like you I do share a general number on a sale to help other rennlisters who may not have been in the Porsche game as long as I have......

The air is thin at these price point.....I have paid premiums for Porsches and I never looked back....I hunt for the Porsche that I want.....price is only a secondary issue unless "the seller is on drugs".....With your profession it is easier...heretofore I have had luxury

Your Turbo is stunning.....enjoy safely and with good health

Thumbs up

Great comments again. I do feel a sense of camaraderie while dealing with all the new "virtual" friends that communicate on this forum. I do feel that it is a place where people like, and should know what they want, and I feel comfortable "telling anything", no big deal!!

I too included my "price" story for general knowledge to assist others who frequent this forum to give a feel for what is going on in the market.. I must admit that I feel that I may have payed 5-10k more than I may have had to....but this car really had everything I wanted and it will probably be a car to keep, use, and cheerish, forever!!

thanks for all the positive replies!!!

Yeah, that car is definitely a great find! If I wasn't so impatient, I would have tried to find one just like yours. I really wanted the carbon package!
