Default Comments on Tiptronic gearbox...advantages/disadvantages...how they are holding up

Considering a 996tt with a tiptronic and don't know too much about them beyond having driven them. Any advice would be helpful...I have traditionally driven manual gearboxes. Thanks

Tip is basically an automatic.
As far as I've heard, it's been a pretty dependable rig and I think Porsche chose a good match for that engine. I believe MB used the same tranny for the E55 AMG.....no problems there I'm aware.

There's a guy running massive power through one with no problems... He just ran
a 10.97 second quarter mile.

With a tip, no one can blame you for a type 1 or 2 over-rev.

One less warranty "wiggle" to live without.

I thought that first gear in the tip was an MB part, but I wasn't aware of identity for the entire unit. I have an E55 (2000) and it definitely does not have the logic of the tip.
The tip is far more than an automatic. It reads throttle-aggressiveness, cornering loads and braking to adjust shift points, including downshifting under braking. I'm not sure most owners ever figure it out, but it is the easiet way to drive really fast if you aren't expert at rev matching and lightening shifts. AS

yeah, i'm really bummed how slow and clunky the 6spd is (compared to the jap competition).

I used to rip lightning fast shifts off in my Z and NSX. The TT otoh 1-2shift is SOOOOOOO painfully slow. I hurried the gearshift once, and broke the plastic bushing!

oh well, 420Hp is nice...

Porsche actually buys the tranmission from Mercedes. They then developed their own computer programming for the transmission that makes the tip so great. The learning aspect (of driving style) of the later version of the tip are again exclusive to Porsche. Audi uses the same transmission in the RS6.
