Default looking for a turbo

hey fellas

I've been swinging back forth vs buying a new 997 vs a lightly used 996.

I really like the performance of the 997 and its interior upgrades, but $90K on a brand new car is a little rich for me (espec when you consider the depreciation).

I never imagined I'd be able to afford a turbo as they normally go for $112K used...until i bothered to keep looking through the years and saw a BUNCH of 02 and 01 turbos for mid-70s to 80s.

So the question is...are the 01/02 turbos dogs? Is there something wrong with them?

Are they reliable? should I pay more to buy a pre-certified car from a dealer? or keep the $12K diff for the eventuAl REPAIRS?

BTW while the reg 996 styling is ho-hum, I absolutely LOVE the way the TT looks.

Default have o1 was a dog

have a 01 they day it showed up I was sick and very happy I had kept my 86 turbo... my 1st mile or so I felt like it was toyota . however once you add europipe and headers ssk it becomes a way better car. If you are going buy get an 02 a year or so of free fixes , porsche just ordered a new trans for mine on the fix free program... the 02 has a glove box if you wear gloves

qirex; I have an '01 with nearly 20K miles. I've loved it since the day I bought it. The REALLY EARLY 01's have front bumperette's that are less pretty and some also had non-hollow wheels. The stock suspension looks agricultural in my opinion, but there are plenty of really good options at $3K and under. Beginning in '02 they did offer a glove compartment and in some instances even cup holders, my car has neither of those. I know of at least a few quite high mileage '01's that were daily driven and gave good service.

Other than that it depends upon the individual car and the deal you can cut. I certainly wouldn't shy away from any year 996TT.

My 2001 Turbo is for sale. It is a later production car without the ugly "bumper warts" that were mentioned above.

It's listed on ebay right now, but feel free to contact me privately at 714-863-7691.

Check out the ebay listing:

I had a 2001 Turbo and is was a great car. IMHO the 996 Turbo is a great deal at the current pricing. You will pick up a significant level of performance over the 997. If you do buy get a 2002 or newer as they added glove box, bose stereo and a few other minor things, plus you will likely get a bit of warranty with an 2002.

You will not regret buying a 996 Turbo.

I forgot to mention that my car DOES have a month left of factory warranty.

This means 2 things:
1. You can buy with confidence knowing that you won't have any major expenses immediately.

2. You can extend the warranty as long as the factory warranty has not expired.

the 996tt is an aweswome car. I've had an ealry delivery 01 turbo for almost 4 years now, and although I've made some of the minor mods listed above, suspension, exhaust, gt3 seats, etc. I always get a huge smile on my face when I fire it up for the first time that week.

Don't be scare off by any year TT. They are all great cars, and other than the glove boxes, stereos, etc., nothing has changed on the car since it was introduced. Other than the option for the x50.

Go for a 996TT, the reason you see a soft resale market is due simply because of overproduction, the car is one of the best values on the market today.

Now for some serious question?

-does the TT have a turbo timer?
-How long must i realistically wait prior to shutting off the car?
-Can I add an X50 kit aftermarket?
-How much extra should an X50 car cost me?
-On non nav-cars, is a nav screen easily added below the CC system pod?

Yeah I'm really excited to get one.

I remember test-driving one 2 months ago while looking at 996 and 997s.

It was a great ride, but I neveer realistically thouught about getting one - too much $$$ for me at the time. Ah well, you only live once!

I almost went for a Gt3 bodykit 996, but that car just didnt really make me feel *that* special way. The lapis blue/black combo was really lame. If you're gonna go lapis blue, you gotta get savannah.

So now I just have to close an RE investment, then Im all set!

I have a silverstone Z, so I really want to avoid another silver car. It seems most TTs i see for sale are silver or black.

My ideal car would be red/savannah.

Wish me luck guys!

Damn dood your car is sweet!

Too bad I want a 6 spd.

Although I'm sure a tip TT is a great ride, I just love rowing my own.

you can add X50 aftermarket, but the price versus performance gain is not worth it in terms of value

you will find much better gains for the money from an aftermarket tuner.

Can't add X50 aftermarket...
Definitely worth it if buying used - premium of a similar X50 over non-X50 is about 5K USD

No, the turbos are great for weekend cars but are also extremly good for daily driving.
