That is a very good question. I much prefer the 996 TT MT Coupe over the stock cabrio because it is better dialed in having been lowered, better brakes and a Markski Stage 1 tune, which woke it up. A factory short shifter and thicker steering wheel add to the excitement. Very fun to drive with precision and great feel - much more nimble than the 997 TT. The 997.1 MT Coupe is a lot of fun to drive too, but has admittedly seen several issues that are just about straightened out. There was a "cut wire" somewhere in the back interior area that was causing a significant loss of power and a few other issues that have been attended to by a reputable shop. Last issues to fix are a driver window microswitch error and removal of bad side window tint. I guess if hard pressed and if I did not use the 996 TT exclusively on the track and had left it a street car, I would probably choose the 997 Turbo for the very slight refinements to engine and chassis and of course aesthetics. Its just badass from any angle. After all, each generation is built upon and evolved from the prior version.

Very nice. I think in my position a 996TT with sorted suspension could be the way forward

very nice pair of cars by the way

My garage currently holds a '11 Turbo Cab PDK and '03 Turbo manual. To answer the OP's question, "is a 996 TT hugely different to live with and drive to a 997.1 Turbo?", Yes and no, if spec'd similarly (I get that I have a 997.2). I might suggest foregoing the Tiptronic and going with a manual; keeping the car on boost is much more satisfying with the manual trans. Looks are certainly subjective, but I find myself enjoying the 996 more than the 997. As for interiors, while the 997 may be more "modern" we're looking at 10-20 year old cars so they're both quite dated. I like the fact that my 996 doesn't have any screens (no PCM) so it feels quite period specific and the organic shapes just do it for me; particularly the door cards with the swooping door handles. The 997 interior is too geometrically square-edged and boring. Driving dynamics are both fantastic and it's a bit hard to quantify, but the 996 has a more raw driving dynamic. Maybe it's the noisier cabin, maybe it's the less refined suspension, whatever the cause, it feels more connected. If this means anything, if I were forced to keep just one, the 996TT is the one I'd take to the grave. 1 data point...take it for what it's worth

Thanks for each and every single reply…. Much appreciated

I’ve decided to look closely at some 996TT’s and if all goes well will hopefully find the right one soon!

In addition to All things/facts mentioned above, on the emotional side, the 996TT has just also really grown on me looks wise too, which helped me come to my decision …. The hunt begins

Hello

Just a quick update since I started this thread …. I narrowed my search down and sent a car for a ppi (sight unseen) today and ended up leaving a deposit

According to the PPI it’s just some wear and tear items, the common “rear wing not deploying”, but overall generally in very good condition I was told. I was looking at a GT2 rear wing anyway

Fingers crossed everything works out…. I’ll also need a major service (including water pump for my own peace of mind) which was factored into the deal

thanks again for all the input which Defintely helped in the decision making process ….

Downside is I don’t know when I’ll be able to physically see and drive the car as I’m away in a different country for a while (long story) … but I figured if I found one in good condition, why not just pull the trigger

Well after starting this thread a little bit ago, here’s my new to me 996TT…. I wanted a 6MT badly but they’re extremely rare in this country and I found a tip in great condition (had a PPI) and just some wear n tear items I gotta take care of ….

Already ordered
- new Brembo brakes, pads n dampers
- H&R adjustable sway bars front and rear and drop links
- 6 new plugs
- stainless steel braided brake hoses (had really spongy brakes after a number of laps on track in my 987.2 cayman and it was scary)
- new rear lower arms and some poly bushes all around….. I’ve never tried poly bushes but if they’re too harsh I’ll go back to rubber

aaaand….. just spoke to Markski about his race exhaust (4 mufflers and cats) which I think I’m getting, which is about the only mod planned for now.

It already has some recently fitted adjustable shocks on it (brand I’ve never heard of so I’m gonna see how they are and take it from there)

I also need an eram kit for the oh so notorious rear spoiler

I love the turbo twists and plan on leaving them on… other than that, I just plan to enjoy the car, not go crazy on mods, and just maintain her well n look forward to being part of the 996TT community.

Here are some pics . Thanks again to everyone who replied

Congratulations, Tips are great on track, no chance of a money shift mis-shift.

Consider getting a paddle shift steering wheel.
