A viscous coupling is a mechanical diff. And I like it though I see the benefits of the 997.

It works fine. It feels like 2wd until you spin the wheels and it catches.

When I purchased my 996TT I also cross shopped it with a 997.1TT. Price was not a consideration.

From a pure driving perspective I thought the 996TT was better in every way. I didn't like the feel of the 997 electronic suspension nor it's four-wheel-drive system. The 996 felt more like a classic 911 Turbo where as the 997.1 TT to me felt more like a modern appliance. That is just personal preference though.

Far as the 996 interior goes I liked the organic feel of it as it matches the organic flowing feel of the exterior and considered it to be a huge improvement from the rudimentary 993 interior.

996 Turbo has more driving feel than 997.1 Turbo... Both in engine response and handling. They are phenomenal cars.

Do you do your own work on your cars? Do you typically make some comparatively minor tweaks to your vehicles to improve them? This can make a huge difference in the ownership experience, and if the answer is yes to either or both, points (IMHO) even more strongly towards the 996.

As for dated interior... Stock or modified, I think they look GREAT!

996tt is not mechanical, its fluid
Ahem... You have heard the term "fluid mechanics"?

The 997tt system is better in every way, minus its locking the car into never being 2wd.
Better perhaps for an SUV. *Not* better for a performance car that you want to feel like an RWD car but with extra traction out of corners. That "minus" is the ball game for a drivers 911!

Currently have 2 of each.
An 02 coupe with MT which has slowly evolved to a track car. It rides on rails. Nothing has ever broke except a blown out boost hose end. All leather interior makes for a refined cockpit.
04 cabriolet MT for tooling around in the sunshine. Comfortable and fast when goosed. Standard seats just not as comfortable.
07 MT coupe which is about as analog as the series can be. PCCB is amazing. But I bang my right knee on the squared off console. Have done long trips in it with ease.
11 turbo S with PDK which is quite fun. This one is scary out of the hole in Sport Plus mode. It’s loud when pushed, big and chunky and wicked fast. Did track it at Road America last year. Rear steering was amazing.

because it actually works. The 996 system doesnt work very well as an AWD system. Might as well be RWD.

Glad I'm not the only one who feels that way... first few times I used it, I cringed and squinted, expecting it to SNAP off.

996 turbo because you can remove the front diff to convert to 2wd which is the best mod ever. With K16 small turbos response is no issue. 997 suspension corrects some of the 996 suspension geometry issues in rear. 997 is basically a 996.3 You can effectively bolt on a large percentage of chassis components between the 2.

I think the 996 badly needs coilovers, tune, and exhaust. Totally different car once done.

All-wheel-drive system on the 996TT works as intended. It's only there to save your *** when the rear steps out in a high-speed drift. I've experienced it many many times at the track.

The 997.1TT system is a completely different animal with a completely different intent. That system is really more of a driver aide, increasing overall grip all the time.

Purely personal preference which system is preferred.

pfbz, gotta say that I love those patchwork (silver/black) mats in one of the photos. Are those from Cocoa Mats? They look great .

Not true. I've done 10s of thousands of miles through terrible weather and the AWD works as it should.

Yah if you kick out the rear and give it some gas the front wheels will pull you around the corner. If you spin off of the line it catches you and pulls you forward. Gotta have PSM off to really do this though. If you go RWD you really need to do a a limited slip diff.

Frankly I am more of a fan of the mechanical front diff than the electronic ones, there seems to be more feel.

The best vehicle I have ever driven in foul weather was a 2002 3/4 ton Suburban with a mechanical 4wd system and it is light years better than the new electro magnetic clutch set up in my 2020 RST.

I feel the same way about the 996 vs the 991; the system in the 996 is much more driver orientated than the 991 - the 991 is pretty simple, point and shoot.... the 996 requires thought and meaningful input.
