I don't think this is a Euro bumper. I believe it may be Japanese spec as it's a Japanese car. Can anyone confirm?

Don't think there is a difference between Euro and Japanese spec bumpers. From what I've seen Middle East and the US are the only ones with different bumpers
Looks like standard ROW bumpers to me.

So, I have a question and I'm having trouble using the search function on this forum.

Is there a thread discussing 996 Turbos that jump out of 2nd gear?

Mine does once in a while and I already had my 2nd gear synchros replaced, which was supposed to be a fix.

Now I'm hearing that there may be a 2nd gear 'detent' that can be replaced.

Anyone have some links, info or suggestions in using the search feature?

I used the Gbox as a preventative measure, I ultimately replaced the entire box.

If yours is doing it now after the work, it is likely going to get worse and ultimately fail completely.

I think if it is already popping out then the detent wont solve it. The detent is a preventative measure but not a cure if the pop out is already happening. Probably best to talk to shop that knows these transmissions.

Is there a thread discussing the 2nd gear topic on the forums?

I think so, you'd have to search for it a bit, but, the problem you are having is well known and unfortunately, fatal for the gearbox.

OK, so an update. After rebuilding the gear box to replace 2nd gear synchros (including shimming them properly) the car STILL kept jumping out of 2nd gear.

The problem was resolved with 2 adjustments.

1) The shifter was slightly out of adjustment putting slight pressure on the shifter cable - so that adjustment of shifter and cable made the shifter feel like a million bucks and
2) a slightly stronger spring for the 2nd gear shift rod detent was put in

Car shifts like a brand new car now!

HUGE props to G-Tek in Toronto and they are highly recommended (and I'm a former Porsche and Benz tech - I just don't fix cars much anymore)

----------------------------------------------

My car has a slight running / driveability problem and I'm wondering if this is a 996TT problem or just isolated to my car.

a) Pulling away in 1st from a stop, under 2000 RPM you get a bit of a very slight hesitation. Hardly noticeable but at times it can be pronounces as the car tends to rock back and forth under slight load in 1st from a stop - you get a 'wup, wup, wup' sort of a rocking to the car as it accelerates lightly.

b) Also, when coming to a stop or navigating 1st and reverse when parking, the car seems to stall at times as the RPM drops to zero rather than stay at idle. A few times I thought I'd stalled the car because it was all new to me but now realize the car RPM just drops and stalls.

Perfect driveability otherwise, lots of power, no check engine lights or problems otherwise.

Has anyone noticed this on their cars?

Have you done a boost leak test yet? That behavior sounds like a vacuum/boost leak, dirty throttle body, and/or failing MAF sensor.

Not yet but thanks for the suggestions.

I assumed it wouldn't be a boost / vacuum leak or a bad sensor as I figured that would trigger a check engine light relatively quickly and also be a more consistent problem but it is possible.

Dirty throttle might be a possibility as that could affect driveability in the low RPM range with relatively little affect to higher RPMs.

Was checking in to see how common of a problem low RPM driveability actually was with this model.

You need to do a boost leak test before you do anything else to that car. 90% of the minor quibbles and odd behavior with these cars is solved with the intake piping and check valves being in proper order.

For sure. The front bumper is not a real GT2 part as it is missing the venting. So would not have all the other pieces (GT2 fender liners, etc)
