Sounds like normal mezger engine noise to me, my car sounds the same. Although they aren’t the smoothest sounding engine at idle they are reliable and generally bullet proof, I wouldn’t worry about it to much.

Mezger noise is like a Rorschach plot…you can hear almost anything in it if you listen to it long enough. Reality is anything you can hear above the normal din of the engine likely would have manifested in some other way already. Just sounds like maybe a wandering idle or little intermittent stumble they all do. Perhaps pull codes and if nothing turns up don’t fret about it. Sounds like you found a great example; don’t let worry dampen the enjoyment of your new toy.

Thank you all for the responses and the time to review the videos. I will be taking it down to Porsche of Nashua this week and will report back. I took an oil sample to send out when I did servicing last week.

I will update the thread once I have some results.

As nearly everyone has reiterated, these engines (at idle) take some getting used to. 'Intermittent stumble' is actually the best descriptor for what I am hearing (thanks Jayzbird). This is exactly what I'm noticing separate from the normal Mezger rattle.

Here is a great write up from a tech if folks haven't seen it yet

Sell the car if a noisy engine bothers you. These cars sound like marbles in a can.

Okay, a few updates.

I performed a throttle reset (reference: https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...e-reset-2.html) and put a fresh tank of 93 through it (91 was in there previously).

The deep thunk/stammer at idle has drastically reduced.

Going in for servicing in the next few days, will report back any further findings.

Hello Stephen:
I just bought a 2002 996 Turbo (triptronic) with only 17,000 miles and I have the same problem. I took the car to a Porsche shop that I have known for many years where the mechanic is a 20 year plus veteran and worked for 15 years at a Porsche dealership.

He told me the sounds were normal AT MUCH LOWER VOLUME, he told me the sound came from the left bank but did not feel comfortable assessing the problem (potential problem) without looking inside the engine.

The car came with service records and one of them clearly describes the engine being taken out and the left bank being opened with nothing abnormal found.
I understand my post does not add too much value, I only wanted to share that I have the same issue and not sure how to proceed.

There are 2 throttle reset procedures in the link you shared, could you please tell me which one did you do?

Thanks

Sounds normal to me, but you might want to change out your engine mounts sometime your exhaust sits pretty low.

I agree however my car seems to be extra loud.
Do you have the experience to recommend a fix? Perhaps replacing tensioners or?

Thank you

Try 5w-40 or 5w-50 oil. Other than that if you have no check engine lights just drive it and enjoy.

Okay, final updates for now.

Went to Porsche of Nashau (NH). The veteran tech there who only works on old Porsches took the car for a spin/gave it a listen/threw it on the lift.

"Noise is from the valve drive. Some noise is normal characteristic of this engine" per the writeup on the invoice.

The rattling and even the random thunking at idle are within the range of weird sounds this engine makes at idle.

Will post the oil analysis when I receive it back.
