Safety problem with Ohlins R&T on 996 turbos
Just saw this on Facebook, sent an email to Ohlins EU and they confirmed that there is a safety issue with their coilovers. They advise not to use the car til they have a solution.
I wonder what the issue is. Looks like front coilovers problem.

Surprising.

For a firm like Ohlins to issue a warning such as that can only mean an engineering design/parts flaw that results in a total and/or catastrophic failure that could lead to serious injury or death.
I hope no one gets hurt as a result.

Which also means something has already happened.

In all likelihood a failure of the shock shaft which cold lead to the inevitable loss of control if it happened at speed. I doubt a recall like this would happen if the problem was a faulty seal or something trivial like that. The front shock geometry on the TT where the shock is angled back (as opposed to mounted on center like on the 2wd cars) and sweeps in an arc is rather peculiar and may place more stress on the shock shaft than anticipated by Ohlins. Being a budget street coilover usually translates to cuts and comporomises having to be made in materials and design to keep costs down. The nature of the problem is clearly a guess at this point but Ohlins shouldn't beat around the bush and simply come out and state what it is. They undoubtedly know. Either way they will get it right in the end either replace the whole kit or just the front dampers. Hopefully it's the whole kit so that you end up with a matched set on all corners as opposed to new shocks on the front and worn out ones on the rear. That's the upside. The downside is that you will need to swallow the cost to reinstall everything and realign the car.

Because, lawyers and limiting liability.

I'm guessing this is why they've been out of stock for quite some time.... hopefully Ohlins gets this remedied soon. I'm not looking forward to replacing the coilovers but it's better than the alternative. Thank you for posting this

I love how they think some can just stop using their car. Sure, I'll just start walking around.
