Default Oil pressure gauge going crazy

A friend of mine has a TT and it's oil pressure gauge is going crazy. Problem is that at idle or driving, it will drop to 0, then shoot up randomly and jump up, down, back to 0, fluctuating wildly. When it goes to 0, there is no oil pressure warning at all. On my car, occasionally the gauge will drop to 0 and I'll get a warning on the dash. When it comes back, the warning goes away. I chalk this up to a loose contact at the pressure sender, but my friends car gives no beep or warning, and mine never fluctuates wildly like his.

His oil pressure sender was replaced but the problem remains. Contacts look solid on the sender. Anybody have an idea what's going on?

Gotta be the leads on the wiring or the sender itself. It's too simple for anything else. If the water temp swings back and forth it indicates an error, I just forget what.

Thanks. The sender was replaced and leads secured though. Is it common for a new sender to be defective?

Not likely, but not impossible. I've had my share of brand new OEM Porsche parts be bad right out of the box.

Could be a problem with the wires themselves downstream of the sender. I had that happen on another sensor a few years back.

Bad ground is most likely. Undo the wiring and re wire. If the grounding is good and with the re wire it is still behaving in the same manner, replace the sender.
