Furthermore, I was able to get the price down more which more than offset the PPI cost. But you do what you want, it's your budget.
No reason to doubt me? why would you, what do I have to gain by lying to strangers on the internet. To each their own, most mechanical parts are the same on all cars. I've been working on cars for a very long time Owned around 30-40

I've decided on a PPI. Better to be informed, and it is just a couple hundred bucks.

I really do appreciate everyone's input, the collective knowledge on this board is over the top!

PPI all the way.
I am sure a number of things will be found and you can use those to negotiate price.
As good as you are checking the car you will not be as thorough as a PPI.
Good luck !

I come from the land of 1.8Ts, and I figure it's time for a big boy car & double my T's! I am thankful for all the wisdom here, and I look forward to my p-car journey.

I'm about to pull the trigger on a 2001 (<50k miles) 996TT with some tasteful mods. But it's 1000 miles away. It's being sold on consignment by a reputable indy. By reputable, I mean a shop that is referenced a lot on these boards in an extremely positive manner. If I were looking at a privately sold car in the same geographical area, this is the shop I would take it to for the PPI.

I have had a few phone conversations with the shop about the car over the past week, and I feel good about the car. The shop has serviced the car exclusively for the past 12+ years - the full duration of the 2nd owner. The service history looks good to me, with regular service and some of the "usual" suspects being handled. (Spoiler Rams & Pump rebuild, Slave Cylinder & Accumulator replaced) The only item that was odd to me, was the Left Exhaust Manifold being cracked & repaired 11k miles ago. From all the photos, I am led to believe that the current owner has really babied the car.

So my question is.. I have decided to fly out the end of the week to see the car in person. Should I schedule a PPI with another shop (perhaps Dealer), while I am there? OR do I look over the car myself and call it good (or not good)?

I appreciate your assistance..
JT
Ask them for documentation on service done to the car whilst its at their shop. I bought my 996 from a Porsche Dealership, and made the decision to skip a PPI, when i found an extensive service done - Brake pads, rotors, coil packs, spark plugs. If they spent that much money making it right, i don't see why i needed to spend more on a PPI. Car came as advertised and has been bullet proof since, apart from a radiator leak from a flying rock

UPDATE:
I am the new owner of a 2001 996TT!

I did end up getting a PPI, and was thankful I did. Not because it found any concerning items (Front Boots need to be replaced - rams have been rebuilt, coils, plugs & accumulator are new), but for negotiation purposes. Overall, the car is in great shape, its 2nd owner really took care of the car. It's still in Cali, but will be making its way to Colorado next week.

I'm super excited about having the car next week!

Congrats! Out of curiosity, how much off did the PPI help you with the price? Post some pics when you get it. There are some good guys on here from Colorado too.

There's a pretty big group of us with 996 Turbos in the front range area, what part of Colorado are you in?

Thanks All! I can't wait to get the car here & enjoy it.

@ipman - After the PPI, I was able to negotiate the price down about 7%. As mentioned, the previous owner kept the car in fantastic shape (always garaged, complete records, issues always addressed, etc) and he had made some tasteful mods (suspension, headers, exhaust, gates, tune). I feel I got a great deal on a amazing car.

@pfbz - I'm in COS. I look forward to meeting other 996TT owners in the area. I'm sure I will spend time on the regional forums, to see who else is around. I've started a list of (what I am sure are) Colorado specific questions.

The Porsche Club Rocky Mountain Region (Denver/Ft. Collins, https://www.facebook.com/groups/pcarmr/) and Alpine Region (CoSprings, https://www.facebook.com/groups/466638836835284/) are both very active and do lots of events together, ranging from drives, social events, track days, club racing, etc... There are also a couple of smaller facebook groups specifically for 996 Turbos in our area...

Congrats on joining the club! I too came from 1.8t's and VRT's of old so wrenching on 996tt's is not a crazy jump.

She's here!

I'm embarrassed.. She's a bit dirty.. I'll be giving her a bath today, and post more pics in a better setting. Can anyone help ID these wheels? I've got a bunch of other questions, but i'll be starting a new thread with all the details. (Sorry for the huge photos.. I'm not the most savvy Forum Poster!)
