Any way to avoid mess draining oil tank?
I completed my 10th oil change today, and each has ranged from a bit messy to an unmitigated disaster draining the oil tank. Today’s bright idea was trying to hold the plug in place to slow the flow. Fail: it was like a ceiling fire sprinkler—oil shot out sideways in all directions.
So my simple question: has anyone figured how to do this without oil splashing everywhere?

Just did an oil change myself this morning. I'm resigned to putting a big piece of cardboard under the car when I change the oil. Today my plan was to hold onto the drain plug and pull it away quickly when it reached that last thread and like always, it slipped out of my fingers and dropped into my oil catch causing the oil coming out to splash everywhere, including my clothes. I just plan on showering and doing a load of laundry after I change my oil

Just had an idea that I'm going to try on my next oil change. I order stuff all the time so I always have cardboard boxes hanging around....I'm going to try putting my oil catch inside of a cardboard box and I'm thinking that it should contain any splashes.

How are you guys getting splatter? I just position a pan to the left of the drain and it flows right in. Never had a splatter problem with the car on jackstands. I always change the oil of any car after letting it for an hour. Not a spot on the floor from my turbo.

I do cold oil changes and it comes out slower and I get more out. I put some thin pink board under the rear half of the car and position my oil catch container so the oil drains right into the hole in the depression in the oil catch basin. The car is jacked just enough that the catch container can fit underneath.

I use a Mityvac to suck out most of the oil in the tank first, then pull the plug for the last little bit. I also learnt the hard way.
The Mityvac tank is measured, so I'll also suck the oil from the drain pan into the tank and I can measure exactly how much oil I've taken out. It makes it much easier to refill since we don't have dipsticks.
