Gig Harbor is really nice, we have looked at a couple of places there- our top spot for escape from King County as well. Im not in a bad area, but it is close enough that some stuff spills over from time to time. Property crime is way way way up in my neighborhood.
Anyway, very cool build on the 996 and the Cayenne. There are some other 996TT guys down in Gig Harbor area I've met over the years. Having Dundon and Spec German in the neighborhood seems to foster a strong Porsche community in that area.

Who will you use in the neighborhood for some dyno runs?

Yeah I need to get on that don't I
I found who bought the Mainline I used to use so Im leaning towards them - they're in Tacoma (not far from Gig Harbor). Dundon has a really nice dyno setup as well, but they don't really do rentals is my understanding.

I went to PIA in Tacoma for the Sti, they didn't want to put the turbo on the rollers, but I'd be curious (in the spring) to know where you go, I'd like to do a few baseline runs.

Carb Connection does a few different dyno days a year with Avants and they have awd rollers. Drift Office also has an AWD dyno that's popular as well.

Great read. Some great ideas too!
I have been wanting to remove the front grills. Like what you did. Also the back bumper.

I'm glad people enjoy the thread. I haven't done a whole lot to the car recently besides change the oil and add a poly insert to the transmission mount. The last couple years have a been a bit weird with a move to a new city, switching jobs, and just normal dad life stuff going on so the 996 has been driven maybe 1000 miles in the last two years. Things have normalized a bit now so I'm hoping to just drive and enjoy the car for a bit.
I'm also currently at the precipice of either declaring the car "done" or jumping off a very steep (and expensive cliff) in terms of chasing horsepower. My turbos could use a rebuild so it makes sense to make the jump into the billet K24 world. Of course this means fuel pump/-8 lines/injectors, and a few other odds and ends to max out the stock internals. Of course, after that is when things start getting really pricey if you want more than ~750hp.
That said, I'll probably take the K24 billet plunge instead of going down the Xona path which I had been debating with myself. Part of that is because I picked up another (non-Porsche) project to relive my youth: a 1991 Eagle Talon TSi AWD.
It's a pretty rare bird considering it has 78k original miles and is essentially unmodified. The only modifications are a freshly rebuilt transmission with beefed up internals for drag racing, a clutch to go with it, and an ACT lightweight flywheel. It's a long story how that transmission ended up in the car, but I'm glad it's there since all the standard DSM transmission issues are addressed. All the standard maintenance is done (timing belt, balance shaft delete, fluids, etc.) and I've acquired a pile of (mostly) period correct bolt-on mods to go on it. I live near a drag strip so I'm going to build the car with the intention of it being a fun toy I can hammer on at the drag strip a few times a year, but still enjoy on the street.

The struggle is real - now decided to go with a new crank, rods and pistons, stay at 3.6, mount the Xona's.

I have a lift so it was really easy, the transmission mount is pretty easy to get out and put back in. Wiggling the inserts in is kind of a pain, I used soapy water to lube them up.

Yeah, that must be very nice. Ok. I have access to an arbor press at work but nothing hydraulic.

I used the FF01 inserts, and, successfully managed to install them without causing any significant damage.
