Actually now that you mention it I'm not 100% sure. But I was charged for the fluid and work as part of a big engine-out service last year so I assumed it was done. It was reputable shop, but no, I never actually saw them perform the work 😐. Do you think it was skipped judging by the material on the magnet?

I wouldn't overthink it. The fluid gets dirty. The trash magnet picks up all the crap. My fluid looked the same and had shavings on the magnet with only around 10-12k on it.

Not about the shavings on the magnet. Those are totally normal. The reason I asked is because if the shop had accidentally not changed the fluid 6k miles ago it could mean the fluid you just changed was in there from when the box was redone many years ago which would make the possibility of that ball being lost in the case during reassembly a lot more likely.

But even with all that I agree with s65e90 not to over think this. If the trans still works well and sounds fine it is most likely in good shape in there.

Just think; there might be a mechanic that to this day that still wonders where the ball bearing he dropped actually went.

Ok thanks guys. I did a quick drive last night and everything still seemed normal so I'll take your advice and try not to worry for now. Not going to lie though, I feel like an M96 driver thinking about his IMS bearing right now. Will it last forever or will it blow tomorrow?? Who knows.

I think I still have the service record for the shop that did the trans. Maybe I should let them know I found it and send it back 😂

Just to follow up on my post, I've driven the car several times now and all seems to be normal. Looks like you guys were right about it being an assembly error. I'm telling you, this car just keeps finding new and creative ways to give me heart attacks for no real reason.

Just finished a track day. The gearbox worked better than ever (due to fresh fluid) the whole day. Confirmed and double confirmed that my gearbox has no problem. Now I can truly sleep at night. Whew...
