Default Rear main seal replacement?

I've been doing a bit of research but haven't come up with much info. The question is:

Is it NOT common to change out the rear main seal when doing a clutch job?

Feel free to point me in the proper direction if I have overlooked the obvious forum post containing this info...

Thanks!

I just did my clutch; did the main rear seal too as it was all apart.

Cheers,

You will already be in there, its cheap insurance. Do it. We did mine when the engine and transmission was out for coolant line welding. Did new clutch and LWFW at the same time.

If it's not leaking leave it alone. Most folks chip the deal installing it and cause a leak were one didn't exist before

I was looking at the repair manual (pg 432 lists it as #1 I believe) but didn't find the correct procedure documented.
I have seen a few posts about other gens, with people prying them out... seems sketchy to me.

I'm 50/50 at this point. The enthusiast in me says keep hunting for info and do it, while logic tells me that this isn't really a well documented (part numbers, special tool, tips, photos, etc) thing that is common, hence my post.

It's a maintenance item (made to be replaced), replace it. Any competent mechanic shouldn't mess it up.

I don't advertise myself as a mechanic, but I do all the work that I can on my own.

I'm tackling this work with a friend but he hasn't worked on a Porsche before.

yeah definitely replace it if you're doing the clutch.

Agree with any/all that say "while your there" with trans dropped.

If you tear it upon re-installing it, you have no business doing it yourself.

It's a rubber o ring kinda thing. Not a big deal and it is a "wear item".

Change it, it's 40 bucks.

If it’s like the 3.4 m96 then it needs to be set to proper depth. If not it will eventually leak.

This is an example of what info I'm looking for, but haven't had much luck finding.

Not sure if I can extend my search parameters outside of the 996TT model or not.

Right, been over that one multiple times. Not sure if it's the same on a 996TT.
