Default Axle Boot & Diff seal

Hello Guys,

Im doing front outer boot and diff seal...

1. Any tips on getting the outer joint off? Im squeezing the C clip and using a hammer to hit it but its not coming off

2. I read an instruction to remove the side cover from the diff, and then install seal.... Is this necessary? Can I just pull the seal out and tap new one on? I was going to pull the splined shaft out of diff and pull seal out..

Thanks

You need to pop off that snap ring. It's sitting in a little recess. Just get it slightly off that recess and have the CV joint turned sideways and keep giving it good wacks with a rubber mallet and it will come off.

I cut 1 side of the snap ring and removed/pulled the ring out the other side. Just expanding the ring and hitting it really won't do anything. When reinstalling, you'll need a new ring. I just had both sides removed this week and what a pain....

I found it easier to do the front inner boot at the same time. The front inner is easier to disassemble and then you don't have to mess with this joint / clip. Might as well 2 new boots at the same time anyway.

Thanks for the replies..

So smart to cut the C-Clip, I would definitely do it this way in future..

I know about removing inner boot first, but if outer boot tore I couldn’t guarantee debris got in, therefore needs to be disassembled..

Check your diffs!! Its a common problem that the seals leak, and it ends up spraying gear oil everywhere so doesn’t necessarily leak on floor so that you can notice..

Why not just remove the old boot and as much grease as possible and then rinse down with brake clean over a 5 gallon pal?
