Default Leak or just old residue

Hello,
Im new to the Turbo club. I traded in my 2003 C2 for this 2002 Turbo Tiptronic.

I just noticed 3 small leak spot on my garage floor. Without jacking up the car, I took some pictures and this seems to be the source of the leak.

Just looking for any idea what it may be or if its just a residue.

Thank you

Look under posts by nelsontod and me, could be the start of either of these leaks.

To be sure you really need to clean that crud off. Most likely you have a small leak.

Wow, deja vu for me. your post is almost exactly like mine, pics and all!!!

I would highly recommend a dealer or shop do a de-grease, that is what I did and the leak was crystal clear. The engine comes from Porsche with a black coating on it already, so dont expect the degrease to make it nice and pretty. The point of it is to clear out the points of possible leaks, and they will focus on the ATF.. I would love to be bold and say that is what you have here, but with out a degrease you cant be for sure.

This is an easy job.

the leak is only present when the car is running. so once you shut the car off it stops leaking, so most of the leak you wont see as you are driving down the highway.

further, the leak is not at the hoses, the leak is from a section where there are seals above the hoses.

This car was driven 400 miles the past yr by the previous owner so he probably didnt notice the leak..

But the car could have been taken out only once during the year and driven 400 miles (or just 5 miles for that matter) with the owner seeing evidence of the leak as he pulled out of the garage. So I don't think it's valid to use "mileage driven" (other than maybe "0" miles) to judge whether or not the owner should have noticed the leak.

Oh, im not blaming the previous owner. I was just saying maybe if he driven in more maybe he wouldve fixed it.

But i knew what i was getting into buying a 16 yr old car.

its really not a major issue. its a mercedes part. its the same atf cooler the 2002 SL uses. the part number is a mercedes part number. beware pelican list 01-05 for their starting with "996: part number. this is inaccurate

Ok, so the leak is no longer there. It stopped around May 25. I bought the car on May 10.

I brought the car to get oil change on 05/29 and my mechanic cleaned the area (see 1st 2 picture above and the last picture). He was saying it might be a tranny gasket and to bring it back after a couple days. But there is no longer any leaks.

Did the fluid run out? haha...Confused

Actually. The fluid could have run out. Best to get degrease and proper inspection.

Is there a dip stick to measure. My mechanic degreased the area when I went for Oil change as well.

No stick for tranny. If you want, have mechanic add fluid and record how much he had to add. They add fluid through the valve on the tranny itself. Tranny hold 15ish quarts. But others should confirm this for me as i just fpund this stuff out when indid my cooler. My mechanic wouldn't let me drive after degrease because fluid was flowing out like the nile.
