When I was looking at 911's, started with 993's, and these were getting on in years. 5-6 owners, all kinds of aftermarket BS.
So, found that the 996tt's were close in $$, so I did the research like your doing.
It seems the manual/coupe versions were also track meat and many had crazy mods.
I keep hearing that Cab/Tip cars are a negative. That was good news for me.
A true Grand Touring Automobile should be a convertible IMHO;
Did not want a track car.
I found Cab/Tip cars were owned and driven by older more financially capable individuals that did not:
Roll the fenders
Super-tune the heck out of it
Bolt on crazy spoilers
No ugly wheels
No aftermarket stereo mods
And the kids can fit in the back
The 05'tts is the top model in the 996 series, and the one to own for me.
I discovered they only produced around 125 manual coupes, so good luck finding one!
However apparently, >1,000 Tip cabs are out there. So good deals should be out there.
In Europe, the Cabs are more in demand than here.

That said, I was very interested in a garage lift. I have about about a 12 foot ceiling. Then the reality of garage door openers set in. I could get a side-mounted one, but the door still has to have somewhere to go. My door height is standard, so I'd probably spend a fortune having custom rails installed that take the door up higher before rolling back.

I paid about $800 to modify my door so it clears the top car. Bigger radius rails and one additional panel at the top. Added a wall mount Lift Master opener to give more overhead room.
You can see the extra panel at the top in this old photo. Sorry about the size.

Wow, that gives me a whole new thing to start researching! I have a 2-wide and a 1-wide. I'd love to put a lift in the 1-wide.

Just watch your head getting out. Speaking from experience.

almost forgot. When I went to wall mount I was able to remove the extra panel at the top. If you need better photo of the rail setup I can take one.

Yep, a wall mount (side mount) garage door opener and a minor modification to the door tracks is all that is needed. I just bought the opener (Liftmaster 8500) from a garage door company and had them install it along with the track modifications. The Liftmaster 8500 retails for $350, so not a big expense.

To the OP: It is kind of amusing that I have an S52 Z3M Coupe, a 2003 996 TT 6MT, plus a 1M in my garage. I also have a couple of Greg Smith lifts, if that is of interest, and I can vouch for them :-)

In all honesty, the one car out of the 3 that I would never sell is the 1M. It is hugely fun to drive, and way more usable and practical than the other two (including the 996 TT). Speaking of car values and what future values might be is a fool's errand. Anyone who buys a car thinking that they are going to make money on it, and assuming that this will rationalize the purchase of an expensive used car, is not thinking clearly.

I like my 996 TT and enjoy driving it a lot; it is a very unique car and nothing else in my garage offers the same experience. Still, if I was looking at buying a 1M or a 996 TT, and I could get a good 1M at a price that I could afford, the decision makes itself.

$2,345 freight included. I have 2 of them in my 3-car garage. I would have 3 of them, but my wife refuses to park under one as she hits things when she parks (like the side of the door opening and the walls of the garage). Great for detailing your car and very helpful for maintenance (especially with the sliding jack tray that's included). No garage modifications or anchoring required. Uses a plain old 110v power outlet. Takes an afternoon, a couple of buddies and a case of beer to put together yourself. 51 inch M-Coupe height plus 51 inch 996TT height plus 4 1/2 inch runway height means all you need for ceiling height is 9 feet and it will work just fine.

Problem solved. Happy 996TT shopping. You're welcome.

I have this exact lift. 996 fits fine on top and bottom. No doubt challenging to park under if you were to drive the car every day. I find it to be very tedious and nerve racking. But on the upside, I can now do a nice alignment as you can level the ramps.

In case anyone remembers this post, I did indeed find myself a nice '05 TTS. The two that I drove before were garbage. This one's the real deal. I've had it for about three months now.

None of the issues with the ones I test drove are there. People told me that there would be more lag with the X50. Nothing could be further from the truth. This car has much more torque. It's happy to pull in whatever gear you're in.

Thanks for the encouragement, everyone (except the guy who suggested I buy a Camry, screw you!)

Nicely done. Now drive it and enjoy the hell out of it. Oh yeah, that first error code probably doesn't mean squat (unless it just won't stop blinking at you!).
