Default 2nd gear synchro?

Hey Guys,

I’ve been meaning to inquire about this for a while now. I own an ‘01 TT which is nearing 30k miles. I hear a good amount about the synchro issue on the 996. My car has never been tracked or raced. No modifications.

I’m interested to find out the percentage of cars that experience this problem and what exactly causes it to happen? Also, I remember someone discussing a GBox gear detent and wanted to know if this is something I should consider.

Any insight would be appreciated!

Cheers,

-Rob

if you dont have the pop out issue then add a 8mm ball bearing and you should be fine.

the issue is improper shimming of the gear stack . only true fix is tear down and rebuild

As mentioned this was a manufacturing issue, which Porsche warrantied on a ton of cars. 15 years on any car that starts getting a 2nd gear pop out issue is due for a rebuild. Adding tension to the detent to try to force it to stay in gear won't fix that.

A better way to phrase my question is how many owners out there have not experienced this issue and what is your current mileage?

Thanks for the feedback!

I'm at 71k on my 03 and don't have the issue but it was my understanding its not as prevalent on the 03 and later models.
