This is my first look at the 996tt site and I fall into this unbeleivable thread. I have seen plenty of this 993tt vs 996tt on the 993 and 993tt site. Always wondered what the response would be here. Truth is it's just like the others. Both are amazing cars (no need to go over the pluses and minuses since that has been done quite well in this thread) and I would love to own both witha nice 930 thrown in. I bought the 993tt because it provides what I want in a car - heritage, power, looks and loads of driving fun.
The bottom line is we are all quite fortunate to own a Porsche especially a turbo. Mike W

Just wanted to say thanks for all the great thoughts in this thread and a similar thread in the 993TT forum.
Y'all helped me decide that the 996TT is the better choice for me. I hope to be joining your ranks within a few weeks.
Thanks!

Having driven the 996TT and a modified 993TT extensively I can say that they are different cars. The 996 is much more driveable, not to say the 993 is not, but the 996 has a duller point to it. From the suspension to the power delivery the 996 is a bit smoother but the 993 is just as effective and has (imho) more character. Althought, in my opintion, the 993 is a smoother shifing car. Also, in terms of problems, the differential especially, the only major problem we have every had in 15 different porsches was when the 993TT blew the rear diff at the drag strip. The 996 has taken more abuse than that car and hasn't broken anything major yet.
My 2 cents

I've had the 993TT, 996TT and now the 996GT2. The GT2 is awesome. But I still wish I had both of those turbos too. I'd like a fully tuned low weight 993TT. Get it at a good price and you have room to play with the mods. On the other hand the GT2 has everything you need and more.

I sold a 996 C4S for a 993 TT. No comparison; these are two completely different cars. I agree with most that it's a personal preference issue, and for me it is the 993 by a very wide margin. The 996 was a wonderful, powerful, exciting machine but it failed the most fundamental, esoteric aspect of being a Porsche: it did not make a connection with me.
I've owned 5 911's and every one but the 996 instantly made a connection, which grew deeper over time. One could go into great detail about how this happens but that's like dissecting a joke to find out why its funny; at the end, it ain't funny any more. When the connection is there, you know it.
If you want creature comforts + modern conveniences + amazing performance, and you're not concerned about build quality that will still be evident in 20 or 30 years, get the 996. It is such an amazing car. But it has a profoundly different personality than the 993 in so many ways.
For me, the 993 (especially the TT) represents the apex of the 911 series, both the last and the best. I think of the 996 as the high-end rear-engine car Porsche made after they gave the 911 its swan song with the 993.

Having owned the 964C2, the 993C4S, and now the 996TT, I can appreciate the significant differences, some say nuances, between these various generations of 911. Note, they are all indeed 911's.
The 993TT is to me a P51 pulling Xg's around the pylons at the Reno air races. All noise and thunder and eyeball popping performance. The plane is still a stick and rudder experience, and only the very skilled can extract its maximum performance. It's loud and hairy chested. It once was the pinnacle of the art. But now it's used for fun, not in anger.
The 996TT is the F16, much higher performance in many areas, but easier to fly at the performance level of the P51. Is it as fun as the P51, in many ways YES in some ways no. It's the one I want to use if I have to go to war, but if I'm looking for a hobby experience, I would select the P51.
Just a thought.......

Best turbo? See my avatar. Last of the man's turbos (save for the GT2 now, I'd be inclined to check one of those out - in 15 years when I might be able to afford one!)
I think I will "work my way up" the turbos. 993TT for me next, then 996TT, etc... I figure these cars are not getting any younger, so I might as well experience them each as they fall into my affordability zone.
