Default Stock 996TT vs tuned 996TT

Not the usual question of how much more power or torque.

My question is the impact on running costs.

Obviously if I use the performance to the full, it'll cost a lot more in consumables and wear will be higher, also I may end up in jail.
This will apply to the stock and tuned car.

What if I'm driving normally, perhaps on a long road trip, I don't want to end up with a car that only manages 150 miles before it needs refilling.

Will the tuned be similar to stock on fuel (when driven normally) ?

Tuned - think K16 billet turbos, free-flow ic, larger injectors and ecu map to suit. Say 600whp.

I have a modified car w/ everyone done except turbos. I still see over 25 mpg on nice long road trips, I take the car on several thousand mile excursions and have no issues. Taken care of it will be just as reliable as stock. Just quicker to get there.

Another data point. I have done a number of modifications including hybrid turbos (UMW). My gas mileage if anything has gotten better. I average about 19.5 over all driving conditions.

I'm tuned with 100 octane + Kline 2.5" exhaust, no other mods. I can easily knock down 23-25mpg on the CA freeways at 65-75mph. Car runs and drives just like stock, only it's got 100 more hp and 100+ ft lbs of torque. I'm inclined to change the plugs every 15K miles vs 30K, but other than that, no impact to running costs (other than the obvious 100 octane @ $7.87 / gallon).

If I detuned slightly for 91 ACN gas, I'd probably even pick up some MPG.

It should be no diff if you are not using the extra power.

Great, thanks for your input guys.

Is it worth going for the X50 pack ? As they tune up well.

Yep besides changing spark plugs earlier then normal, but as long as you keep your foot out of it the cost shouldn't be any higher........But whats the fun of that....

no not really worth the money when you have perfectly good working turbos already.

So this depends on how much premium you are going to pay for X50. I bought mine new and the X50 option was ~$17K. I got way better performance HP & Torque as well as very linear boost delivery at a fraction of the cost. They can all be tuned nicely.

Great replies - I can tell you guys are enthusiasts.

How can I be sure an X50 car is really X50 ? I've used VIN decoders, that info doesn't seem to be there.

sticker on underside of bonnet shows major options. “ x50 “ would be there if x50 car

My bonnet sticker does not include the option code X50 but my original window sticker does have the $17k power kit option. So the bonnet sticker is not always complete however mine's the only one that I've ever heard of like that. It should be included. Other signs are the backs of the intercoolers are rougher and obviously the K24 Turbos.

I have a tuned X50, and it is worth the cost. Only time extra fuel is when spooled up, which in my case is all the time. If I want gas mileage, I have my diesel Turbo truck to drive. Porsche = power usage.

X50 was worth the cost to many when the cars were new but there are so many choices now for similar or significantly more power that the value derived from an X50 kit has collapsed versus other options. Nice kit to have though!
