Default Gas pump woes

Ever since I bought my '03 TT a year ago, I noticed that when I go to fill the tank, it shuts off the pump way early. It seems that the filler tube isn't venting properly, so I can't just set the lock the hose on "auto" and let it fill b/c it will shut itself off, then I have to manually pull the the nozzle in and out to coax the filler tube to accept more gas. This has been a minor inconvenience, so I've never bothered to have it checked, but I thought I would see if anyone out there had some ideas on this.

Thanks,
Joe

Replacing the fuel tank vent valve is a common and inexpensive repair you can do yourself if you can remove the front fender liner.

Have you filling it with the nozzle upside down, handle in the air above the fender? This is how I have to do it. Fills fine on auto, but you just have to find a balance point. You might want to try this before chasing a bad vent.

That is how I fill mine. Found a lot of the newer pump handles slightly hit the fender so flipping upside down also seems to help with filling issues.

You should also check your fuse box. If I remember correctly a fuse that powers the the cigarette lighter also powers a security valve in the fuel filler neck.

Good info, thanks. If I don't do the upside-down thing mine will shut off at 3/4. Will check out that ring + fuse.

i gotta contortionist fill also holding the nozzle at the 3/9 o'clock position lol. if it gets worse or wont accept fuel at all?

as other have suggested, its the filler vent valve, a common failure point.

That's the same way on air cooled too.

Default Gas pump woes

Thanks for all your replies. I guess I'll start with the upside down filler pump method, then work my way down to the potential vent replacement.

when systems are working right, any 911 can be filled normally, no need to fill handle upside down...

mines never been "right" on this car. its hold nozzle @ 9 & 3'o'clock position or it wont take ( much ) fuel. when my last 996t did it, there was no "nozzle manipulation" possible and i had to r&r the filler vent valve thing.

Agreed, I have just noticed some of our pumps here in Mass have the handle/nozzle differently positioned where it hits the fender before seating, so I always invert. Invert also seems to solve the issue when the vent valve needs to be replaced too.

I ordered a vent valve after having some fill up issues. Car has not misbehaved since new part showed up. Still sitting on workbench. Weird.

aint that the way? ha. there are also times when a bad gas cap can mimic vent filler issues. make sure the cap is sealing properly also.
