Default Turbos Seized, Best Replacement?

Both turbos on my 2001, 100,009 miles have died.
What route to go down, repair, refurbished, other make?
Can't contemplate the cost of Porsche originals as they are ruinously expensive compared to the value of the car.
Thanks in advance.

any decent turbo shop should be able to fix you up... assume the wastegate shaft is what you are referring to as seized?

Assuming you have K16's you should hit up Sam @ ByDesign. For a very reasonable number he can take your cores and turn around a set of billet 1668's that in my opinion exceed everything else available for the price.

Were there any tell-tale signs before they seized?

Nothing much, other than not hearing the waste gates, and the Boost Pressure not as high.

My mechanic is of the opinion that refurbished ones are not worth their time or my money, as they have had bad experience with reforms in the past.
Therefore I have decided to bite the bullet and go for new Borg Warner K16's, but rather than pay Porsche £2,500 to put them in a pretty cardboard box,
I will buy them directly from Germany for a much more palatable (but still painful) £1,200

How high is the boost going? You shouldn't be able to hear the wastegates.

Greasy, nothing wrong with an upgraded stock core turbo. its not a refurbishment, its an upgraded unit. likely your best bet if you want to stay with a stock K16 sized turbo and are ok with a nice performance bump.
