[QUOTE=Kevinmacd;14622257]Skip the AMG since its for your wife, just get the GLE with the V6, save good amount of $$. The non AmG GLE starts at around $52k.[/QUO
Test drove this today. It’s bigger than I expected, but it is quick. Dealer is asking 67k. I keep leaning to the new x5’s. Seems like a lot of car for the price. http://www.autowrangler.com/used/Mer...2b626bbea6.htm

For the wife I would skip German and go with Infinity or Lexus, way less maintenance, hold value better and cheaper. My wife does not appreciate the driving qualities of European cars. Also she parks in malls, schools etc and her cars get scratched...better on a Japanese car. Heck I'd even suggest getting a crossover vehicle as my family does not require off road capabilities

I got my wife an 08 Cayenne Turbo.
Positives:
-The depreciation is almost done.
-It’s not mint so I don’t care if she dings it up.
-The Cayenne forum is just as good as the 996Turbo forum for learning all about this vehicle and sorting out issues.
-She now drives a Porsche.
-I now own a Cayenne Turbo.
Negatives:
-More expensive to maintain than her old Kia.
-Gas guzzler.

I'd go away from German for this as well: Range Rover Sport or, better yet, a D5 (or LR5 or whatever they are called stateside). But that's just me.
Not particularly helpful - sorry. :-p

Went a similar route when wife wanted a bigger suv to replace her aging 4.4 x5. She liked the look of the new Explorer and the twin turbo 6 ecoboost from Ford makes over 400hp with a tune. Got a BLK/BLK Sport with 22k miles on it for half cost of a new one. Glad she didn't run with my GL550 idea....

We've had several Explorers over the years. When fully optioned, they're pretty nice. We haven't owned one of the current generation, but I've driven a few of them and was impressed.
BTW, my wife just tears the crap out of cars in ways you cannot even fathom. What she did to our E55 AMG over a period of 2 years was criminal. I will never again buy her an expensive car. I just got her an '06 Cayenne S. True story, first day, she broke the CDR-23. That stereo worked fine for at least 11 years, yet didn't make it one day under her care. Not a coincidence.

Aside from the poor-ish gas mileage, my wife loves her GLK350 which she's had for about a year now. I've also been really impressed with the ride quality (quiet/smooth), handling, and build quality.

I also went a bit of a different route. When I married my wife she had an '08 X3. One day I asked her when she last had the oil changed. She said it had to have been recently - and I made her find the receipt. Well, as it turned out, it had been over 3 years and ~35k miles. After finally changing the oil, the car began leaking quite a bit in my new garage and after having a baby I felt it wasn't safe for her to drive any longer.
Soooooo, I surprised her with a new Volvo XC90 Inscription with the air suspension. It's absolutely awesome for a baby hauler. Even I don't mind driving it when we have to take the family somewhere. Highly recommend it for a wife/baby hauler.

So I picked up a 2017 x3 with 11,000 miles with 39 months remaining on the manf. Warranty. Hell of a deal. $29,800 out the door.
