Default Just an FYI: Yes, the 997 Turbo gearbox does work in a 996 Turbo

Hi everyone, so I had a different thread going where I had to replace the 6 speed manual gearbox in my 2004 Porsche Turbo. The insurance company paying for the work at the Porsche dealership approved the installation of a 997 Turbo manual gearbox. There was a lot of conflicting information on this from what I read.. but after the installation we found that the 997 Turbo manual transmission works on the 996 Turbo.

How much work was required to make it work?

I always thought it was a direct bolt on but not necessarily an upgrade

Nothing was altered or changed. It literally bolted up.

Is there any benefit at all to doing this?

Does this mean a 997 PDK transmission would fit also?

Interesting question but I do not think the PDK was offered mated to a Mezger engined 997TT.

even if it did wouldn't be worth the effort, ECU, harness etc.

I forgot about all the other stuff needed for a PDK. Definitely not worth it.
What is the advantage of the 997 manual? Cost, availability, ratios, durability?

the advantage is a negative. theres virtually no upgrades in terms of gears for the 997tt trans vs the numerous stronger gears and longer gears available for the 996tt trans.

its a shame the ins company beat you in to using a used wrong part for the fix the shop did. personally i would sue both outfits and the porsche dealer should know better

I thought 997TT gearbox had different gear ratios optimized for the different torque delivery of the 997.1TT engine and its variable turbine turbos that allowed for better low end torque.

It works but without a doubt it's absolutely a downgrade on all fronts... I would unequivocally make the insurance company remove it and put in a proper gearbox. Lawyer up!

What are the actual differences? Gearing? shaft layout? Snychros? Forks?
