Question $9000 front diff repair

Is it very common to have a front diff go out at 42000 miles? I was told the bearing went out and threw oil out. The left front axle was replaced

This was repaired at a dealership in WA state

I asked if he thought it was from wrong tire size but he had no idea

Not common at all. What "went out"?

What tire sizes do you use (front/rear)?

I was thinking the same thing. If the car was running taller back tires, then it could be a proof point regarding the age old tire height ration debate.

Mine went (very small leak) in the first 5K miles. Completely replaced under warranty. Porsche did NOT want it repaired, so they replaced it with brand new.

Recently at shop near me they had a 996TT come in with cracked front diff housing. It was the back side of the housing and not a cheap repair.

Could you elaborate on the symptoms you experienced? A complete failure is petty unmistakable--sounds like someone threw a bunch of rocks in your transmission. I'm wondering what if there are any early warnings you had?

sounds like it's not his car but a potential car he is looking to buy...

shop sounds a bit shady in not knowing what caused it and the high cost of $9k...

I would never ever get a new one if my front diff would fail. I always would by a LSD and would convert to rwd

Similar experience with the 6-speed in my 2003 Turbo. Selector shaft leak and Porsche elected to replace the transmission vs. repair. The car was under CPO warranty.
