I think it has a lot to do with age and number of heat cycles. Cup cars really only see a fraction of the hours of a street car.
We have still seen failures even on the cup cars.
But, all of that said, I was not aware that they do that. I will have to hit them up and see what product they use. Still, pinning or welding is best if you have the engine down anyway.

BBIs Pipes are nice, I think it's $200 for the set.
They install these on every Mezger that is pulled from a car, including cup motors they rebuild.
The kits are slightly different for 996.1, turbo, 997.1 gt3 etc.

I recently ordered the kit from bbi for my 6GT3 but it did not look like the pic above. They sent me 3 pipes of one diameter and 3 of a different diameter for a total of 6 pipes all about the same length. Hope it's correct.

i used a set set of Bbi pipes, no issues welding these!
