Smile 1997 Porsche 911 GT1 Evo

Back in 1998, the pops and I drove up to Laguna Seca to see the last race of the FIA GT Championship. Included were CLK GTR's, 911 GT1's (1998 design), Panoz GTR, Marcos, etc. Great racing and even got to meet Ricardo Zonta (pre-F1) and Klaus Ludwig. In vendor alley, I bought a Tamiya model of a 1996 Porsche GT1 which was a joy to build.

Today, I see on Autoblog that RM Sotheby's is auctioning off a 1997 GT1 Evo. Going through the pictures, it brought back a lot of memories building the Tamiya model. Very nostalgic. The pictures are downloadable and make for great wallpapers as well. Enjoy!

Brings back great memories for me too, as I was in attendance too. I remember standing about inches from the GT1 while the Porsche techs were working on it. Then on another note, BMW would simply drive into a white tent, and once the car was in they dropped the curtin so no one can see / watch there car....I guess that's why I don't know a BMW.

Thanks for sharing your personal story. I can't describe how badly I miss those days of sports car racing.

Working on their cars in secrecy, that's no fun. We might have passed each other 18 years ago in the pits!

Wow, that McLaren is walking by the Porsche on the straights. But the GT1 is dancing gracefully in the corners. I get hyped up watching that video!

I miss those mid-late 90's racing days as well. Speedvision World Challenge was another fun racing series I'd never miss on the tube.

Ya, we probably did pass each other in the pits.
After all these years, we are still playing with these Porsche cars. I myself, finally spec order a 2003 GT2. Family asks me when am I going to grow up and stop playing with these Porsche's. My response has always been, its better than me running around with other women. I'm just in the garage.
