Hi Hendrik,
Does the engine crank over and not ignite, or does it not crank over?
Did the engine start the second time you tried?

Default instrument

I just found out that the battery is dead, so now I am wondering how to open the hood to get the battery charged

Check You Tube and search for 996 dead battery hood unlock. You have to connect a battery charger or jumper cables from another car to the fuse box. There is a designated position to use so that power can unlock the hood. very easy however just remember to connect correctly
