It is totally normal Max, most GT3's do this for 3-5 secs upon start up.

So, is there a problem with the GT3's that never make this noise?

3-5 seconds is normal for a car that has not been driven in a number of days. It's the chain tensioner that rattles.

Just got word from the dealer. They can't find anything wrong with the car. As my warranty expires in 3 weeks, they will make a note that this still may be an issue and have agreed to honor it past the warranty if the problem persists. We have yet to negotiatie that time table...

I am thinking that I may want to take it to the other Porsche dealer for a second opinion. Also, I have recorded a WAV file which clearly details the engine "rattle" sound during start-up. If any of you want it, I can email it to you. The file size is 1.93MB unzipped...

Don't stress over this. My experience is that PCNA is good about covering things even after the warranty is up.

My car sounds loud too when it sits 3 or 4 days without being driven. The oil settles in the sump and takes a few seconds to re pressurize so the oil gets back to where it needs to be. Frankly it sounds like a purpose built race motor warming up. I think it's uber cool

I got my gt3 this past Monday and after sitting for one day started it today and it sounded like my lawnmower for about 3 seconds. I was concerned until reading these posts. I rolled my 500 plus hp 930 3 weeks ago so I took the leap to gt3 world.

My knees rattle and creak if they sit for a few days.

Thanks Holger & the Rennlist Community. This board is like therapy!

I spent about an hour this afternoon with the head tech at the Porsche dealer and really picked his brain. He thinks the noise is from a tensioner, but doesn't think that I should really worry too much about it. The service manager noted that Porsche should honor any future problems (within the next 6 months) as the problem has been logged and the car is in great condition with zero type II over-revs. That leaves my mind at ease...

I also learned that Porsche Sales will not sell any aftermarket warranties for GT3s or Turbos, but do cover 911s. My biggest worry would be the need for an engine rebuild. This would run $8500 plus 26 hours of labor (at $110 per hour) - so the total cost would be around $12K. I can live with that risk...

Get muffler bypass pipes and you won't hear anything else at startup...guaranteed!

I asked my tech about the start up rattle when I first got the car last summer. Rattling sound is normal. IIRC it is not from valves but from chains or tensioners pumping up. Nothing to be concerned about.

For you guys who get this "normal" internal rattling.....what oil do you have in the engine?

This start up sound is normal for the first few seconds in a true, dry sump engine like a GT3.

This is a very fair question, and one which I forgot to address. Last August, my new mechanic who specializes in servicing GT3 Cups for IMSA recommended that I use Mobil 1 15W-50. The Porsche Dealer thinks this may have contributed to an even greater level of noise with the tensioners.

We went back to 0W-40 yesterday, and I will continue to monitor the situation...
