Default Unusual oil leak ?

Following a spirited sunday morning blast i returned to find oil
Dripping badly . Examination on the ramp next day revealed
The leak from the top of engine near oil cooler , so it had to be
Engine out today. Picture below shows the source of the leak
Although the seals not obviously broken . Been using the search
But not found another example . So all seals gaskets ordered plus the
Usual while your in there checks and belt , plugs , fuel filter etc

Heres a pic for anyone interested

stinks, can't say I remember hearing of a leak there ever but it's obviously a possibility. I replaced all of those gaskets on my car when I had it apart previously.

If your coolant fittings aren't welded of pinned already do it now while it's apart it'll save headaches down the road.

I had a leak from that area just before taking delivery in August. I believe it was a seal from the oil cooler and I'm not familiar enough with the schematics to tell how related they are. I can dig up more info on parts if you're interested...

I also did the usual refresh items you noted plus pining coolant lines, most hoses, t-stat, and water pump. Here's the main thread I used as a reference: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-gt2-...lse-to-do.html

Update - after a good clean up and check over we spotted the
Real culprit - the core plug on the top of the block near the
Oil cooler . Watch put for this one as these cars get older

Can you better point out where on the block this plug is? I've had my motor out and don't remember that one.

I know there is a similar plug on the back of the case in the housing above the rear main but I'm guessing that's not the one in reference here.

Looking through Serge's tear down pictures here I'm still not sure I can identify the location.

https://rennlist.com/forums/996-gt2-...3-4-liter.html

Background. Got my transmission out today to address rear main leak and found there's also a leak on top of the motor somewhere near the oil cooler. Want to be sure I don't miss anything when the motor comes down.

Thanks

That you very much. That helps alot. Interesting that that same plug on the engine build thread I linked above looks like a threaded plug on the other car but was a press fit plug on your car.

Motor comes down in the next couple of days I'll keep this in mind as a possible source for the leak.

Glad to have helped . When we went to Porsche for a plug
They only offered the threaded one . IIRC they changed for the
997 series .

Digging this thread up as I have the same failure, struggling to see the location on any diagram or on Serge's build thread. Any pointers? Many thanks.

I never followed up in this thread but my oil leak that was in that area ended up being the rubber junction in the metal return line that runs from the crank case up to the dry sump tank. Oddly enough the replacement part has a metal braided hose section instead of just bare rubber like the OEM piece.

part #29 in this diagram...rubber junction is where the line next to the 29 terminates. Wasn't a huge leak and only leaked when it was hot and run at higher rpm.

I had exactly the same failure, rubber junction of the return line. Rather than wait for the updated part to get here from Germany, I had a local hydraulic shop replace the rubber section on the original with braided stainless. No issues since then.

Thanks for those. This is definitely the core plug failure from the OP. Just looked at his location and he's also UK, must be the **** weather...

Those who have had this oil leak, is the oil pooling on the top RHS of the motor? I have oil collecting on the top RHS of the motor towards the front of the engine bay, I wonder if it might be this issue.
