Default 6GT3 and 'Ice Mode'

Hi all,

Was up at Tremblant a couple of weeks back - ok, more like a month now, flying into the Carousel (turn 9) only to have the guy in front of me decide to slow down RIGHT NOW, feeling that this was probably a good thing to do at this point, I very gently SLAMMED on the brakes to find pretty much nothing... Pedal was firm, pads were very newish, fluid was also newish, tire circumference was pretty close to identical. Apply the brakes was pretty much equivalent to doing nothing.

Being rather aggressive with my brakes, this happened another time (or 2).

Got nervous, and called in the experts - in this case Darrick Dong, Director of Motorsports for Performance Friction Brake Pads - me being the dummy I am, asked why the pads were suddenly going green on me - at a pretty bad time in sort of a WTF manner.

Darrick, being a nice guy, just pointed me to this talk - the nitty - gritty of what I experienced is around the 15 min mark, and spent time explaining things. All-in-all not a good thing for some of the best brakes around to be neutered by this system, esp one that Porsche would know was tracked...

https://vimeopro.com/user25813271/pe...ex-performance.

Now I understand all I NEED to do is spend $10k and buy a Bosch motorsports ABS unit, but that sort pots a crimp in the ol track budget, not to mention the 'interesting' converstaions I would end up having with my already very understanding (but somewhat bored of all this) wife...

So, has anyone just pulled the ABS fuse or done something else? I understand from my conversation with Darrick that I need to roll onto the brakes - I am more concerned about the crisis situation where there may not be the time for this.

Thoughts / opinions welcome...

Ray

I've had 'ice mode' in plenty of other cars but never in my GT2, think the ABS system is pretty good for a street car...but I am sure the Motorsports unit must be fantastic
I'm very much in belief that being more linear in brake application will avoid the issue
Cheers,
Rob

Don't stab the brakes especially in a braking zone that my have lower grip. Set the brake and very quickly get into it. You can 100% control ice mode. I've had it often enough on a couple tracks here in a few specific corners that my muscle memory knows what to do and it doesn't freak me out. First time I went off track. Lol. Brown moment (just drove into dirt)

Anyway the way he describes this is totally accurate.

You don't need Motorsport abs although it would be nice.

Would this be considered ice mode. Had new pads and fluid changed day before a track day at Sears. I bedded them on the way to sears.
My 1st session was just a warmup so took it easy but on second session I got deep braking into T5 slight downhill before the carousel and as I braked deeply car did not stop but it finally engaged and was able to stay on asphalt as I turned. Thoughts? Mike

Ice mode is very easy to engage in a 7GT3. I've never had it happen to me in a 6GT3. You must've been hitting the pedal like a hammer.

oldskews4: I did - I usually brake very deep into corners / trailbrake, and a advanced driver jumped on his brakes far earlier than probably should have.

996FLT6: Generally when this happens (based on Darrick's video and my experience) is that the brakes ONLY comes back when you letup and re-engage...

Spyerx: I agree that it can be controlled in normal conditions, I usually am ok with the brakes, problem here was that someone did something dumb in front of me and I needed to react hard and immediately - was actually picking where I was going to go off...

Thanks guys - has anyone disabled ABS? (Yea, I know it is an important safety device ...)

Thanks

Ray - who is old enough to remember the days before ABS...

What tires are you running? The only people I know that have had this issue are running widebody and slicks. You know the cars.. they're from your area.

Yep - know the cars well - have spent many a lap chasing after them - kinda feel like one of those greyhounds and the pesky rabbit :-)

I am running Nitto NT01s.

Under 'normal' hard braking I see ~ 1.2g of deceleration (measured - should check and make sure I am not lying...) and I am NOT into the ABS - generally feel like if I am there, I am not braking as well as I could

Sorry, Nittos are 315 in the rear, 235 in the front, pads are Performance Friction PF08 front & rear. ALSO the rear rotors are 350mm not 330mm...

Maybe because the rear tires are taller than the fronts compared to the oem ratio? The 245 front might make a difference.

Circumferences are virtually identical. The street system will tolerate ~6% differential front to rear but that is a completely different problem...

Have you inspected the pads since for any unusual wear?
