Default 996 vs 997 Cup Steering Wheel

Which do I want? 996 or 997?

350mm

vs. 320mm

I hear the 996 is more dished and sticks out further and the 997 is less dished more flat. What's everyone's preference? Cost is exactly the same.

I hear the smaller dia 320mm wheel slightly obscures the tach at higher rpm ? I'm ready to buy also... but from an aesthetics I prefer the smaller wheel with the Porsche crest horn button and darker wheel color match my black interior. Thinking the deeper dish not that important since I can adjust the seat... but perhaps the deeper dish also contributes some instrument cluster sight issue ?

Your sizing is off. The top momo (996) is 350mm. Go with that one.

You're right...updated.

So Momo over OMP? Even with the extra dishing?

The top Porsche embossed is perfect for the 996. Yes it obscures the top of the tacho a bit but it's never bothered me. Just perfect feel and weight, dish is fine, I'm 6'2" and no issues.

I don't use a quick release and it is ok. If you wanted to use a quick release, you probably shouldn't use a dished wheel.

I also have the 996 cup wheel with the cup boss (no quick release extension). I'm 6' with a longer torso and the top of the wheel blocks numbers 2-7 on the tach and most of the speedo (you can still see the digital speedo read out). This bothered me quite a bit so I pulled out my seat cushion (euro seats) which sits me lower in the car so only the 5-6 are are hiding now. I also prefer being lower in the car and the seat is still comfy without the cushion providing you aren't going on a super long road trip. The dish is not an issue, although I'm surprised these cars don't have a telescopic steering column.

My only gripe with this wheel is that it's quite thin. I don't really take my hands off the wheel much at the track so I prefer a thicker moulded grip like the 997 wheel. You quickly get used to the 996 wheel though and it looks period correct for our cars, it's a beautiful wheel and the increased feel you get over the heavy airbag wheel makes it a very good bang for buck mod.

How well does the suede work/hold up with sweaty hands? I'm considering a suede wheel because at times it is difficult to grip my leather wheel when my hands sweat and I'd rather not have to use driving gloves.

^^^ the alcantara is more durable than you would think but if you have naturally oily and sweaty hands it will become mat over time. There are certain cleaners out there designed specially for Alcantara but a clean rag with plain water works well for maintenance.

You can always get a short boss if you want a QR.
